But Slower, quieter, far less plot-per-episode — if you loved the twists and triangles, this restraint might frustrate you.

Peyton Sawyer is literally named after this show, and both are built on the same premise: a small town's respectable surface hiding everyone's secrets.

The primetime soap that invented the genre — a small New England town, buried scandals, moral hypocrisy simmering under every porch light. Knowing where the name "Peyton" actually came from makes it irresistible.

But Black-and-white, stagey, and paced like the 1960s network television it is — patience required, and no basketball whatsoever.

Gilmore Girls2000

Small town, tight-knit cast, family secrets simmering under everyday life — cozier and funnier, but with that same sense that everyone in town is tangled up in everyone else's business.

But Far less romance-driven melodrama and much more talk — if you came for love triangles, you'll be waiting.

Everwood2002

Same WB-era small-town-family sincerity, with a father-son story instead of brothers, and just as willing to make you cry on a random Tuesday.

But Quieter and more medical-drama adjacent — less romantic churn, more grief and growing up.

Gossip Girl2007

Takes the same soap machinery — secrets, triangles, parents behaving worse than their kids — and moves it to Manhattan's elite, turning the volume way up on wealth and scandal.

But Glossier and meaner-spirited; the small-town warmth of Tree Hill is nowhere to be found.
