Dan Scott is Tree Hill's golden boy gone to seed with money instead of glory, the car dealership owner who once dreamed of the NBA and now lives it vicariously through his sons. He plays favorites, keeps score, and cannot resist twisting a knife if it moves him closer to control. Charm comes easy; conscience does not.

Paul Johansson plays him without a hint of cartoon villainy, which is what makes him unbearable in the best way — the smile never drops even as he wrecks a room. The show lets him be genuinely persuasive, so every scheme feels less like melodrama and more like watching a father talk himself into believing he's the hero.
