Underneath the growling is a coach who genuinely wants these boys to become decent men, not just winners.

Barry Corbin plays him with a weathered, unhurried authority that never tips into cliché old-coach sentimentality. The writing gives Whitey real stakes beyond the scoreboard, and Corbin's gravelly delivery makes his rare moments of warmth land like earned rewards rather than softness, which is exactly why the kids—and the audience—trust him.
