Nora Ephron's ode to the idea of destiny, built almost entirely out of longing rather than contact. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan spend most of the runtime on opposite coasts, connected only by a radio call-in show and a shared belief in old movies. It's soft, unashamedly sentimental, and works because both leads underplay it. For anyone who wants a love story that's more ache than spark.

Ephron reunites Hanks and Ryan for a spiritual sequel, swapping radio for early internet chatrooms. Same warmth, same New York glow, and the chemistry hasn't dimmed a bit.

But The anti-corporate-bookstore plot now reads a little quaint, and it's essentially the same trick played twice.

When Harry Met Sally...1989

Ephron's sharpest script, and the film that basically invented the modern rom-com's rulebook. Funnier and more cynical than Sleepless, with a friendship-first structure that still feels fresh.

But More talk than swoon — if you want pure yearning rather than witty deconstruction, this bites harder than it soothes.

The very film Sleepless weeps over on-screen — watch it and you'll understand exactly what Meg Ryan's character is chasing. Lush, old-Hollywood, genuinely moving.

But Black and white, English, and far sadder — there's no wedding-dress dash to the top of a building here, just restraint and consequence.

Same gentle, fated-strangers warmth, filtered through Richard Curtis's London instead of Ephron's coasts. Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts have easy, low-key chemistry that never oversells itself.

But The celebrity/civilian premise dates it a bit, and the humour is broader than Sleepless's quieter charm.

But Uneven episode-to-episode quality, and the tone swings from sweet to sentimental to sad without warning.
