Tarantino rewrites World War II as pulpy wish-fulfillment, splicing spaghetti-western style dialogue duels with scalp-hunting GIs and a teenage cinema owner plotting her own revenge. It's talky, gorgeous, occasionally shockingly violent, and structured like a string of tense short stories that all detonate at once. Best for people who like their history rewritten with real style and don't need it to be respectful.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like long, talky set-pieces where a single scene of polite conversation slowly tightens into violence, and you enjoy a director who loves cinema enough to bend history for it.

Skip it if you need a story that moves briskly, since this one lingers in its tense rooms for a long time and its violence, when it comes, is blunt and unflinching.

What it asks of you: Long chapters that linger over dialogue, then snap without warning into brutal violence, so it rewards a viewer willing to sit with it for over two and a half hours.

Spielberg's tense, morally exhausted thriller about Israeli agents hunting the perpetrators of the Munich massacre asks the harder question Basterds skips: what does revenge actually cost the people carrying it out?

But It's grim, deliberately joyless, and offers none of the cathartic pleasure of watching Nazis get their comeuppance.

The Great Dictator1940

Basterds ends with cinema literally burning down Hitler as historical fantasy; Chaplin made a film attacking Hitler in real time, with real stakes, not the luxury of hindsight. Same weapon, wielded decades apart.

Chaplin's satire, made while Hitler was alive and the war was just beginning, ends with a barber mistaken for a dictator delivering a direct, unguarded plea against fascism — comedy as an actual act of wartime defiance.

But The tonal register is pure silent-era slapstick and stagey rhetoric; it will feel formally distant, even quaint, next to Tarantino's kinetic style.
