Television series

Night Sky

A quietly strange science-fiction drama about an elderly couple who've kept a portal to an alien world secret for decades. When a stranger arrives seeking answers, their careful isolation crumbles into mystery and wonder. Contemplative, patient, deliberately paced—it moves at the speed of discovery rather than plot. For viewers who'd rather sit with strangeness than rush through it.

The OA2016

Ambitious, genre-bending mystery that trusts its audience completely. Five dimensions, parallel realities, and a heroine who may or may not be telling the truth. Visually inventive and emotionally grounded.

But Canceled after two seasons on a cliffhanger. Some find the mythology-heavy plotting overwrought; others find it indulgent.

Dark2017

German sci-fi masterpiece about time loops, family secrets, and a small town's hidden horrors. Every frame matters. Perfectly plotted across three seasons with an ending that actually sticks the landing.

But Dense, intricate plotting demands active attention. Subtitled. The first season moves slowly and you have to trust it will pay off.

Manifest2018

Passengers return after five years with no memory of missing time. Warm-hearted mystery that prioritizes character and emotional stakes over pure spectacle. Genuinely affecting at its best.

But Unevenly written; narrative momentum falters in season two. Sometimes prioritizes melodrama over sense.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Manifest Destiny

Both prioritize mystery and patience over spectacle. Both suggest that the universe knows more than we do, and that discovering truth might be destabilizing.

Found-footage cosmic horror that builds dread from nothing. A deep-space rescue mission becomes something far stranger. Claustrophobic, intelligent, genuinely unsettling—treats sci-fi mystery with serious weight.

But Shot in found-footage style; some find it disorienting or tired as a format. Very slow build; minimal dialogue and maximum ambiguity. Ends without resolving much.

The Expanse2015

Hard sci-fi with grounded characters, political intrigue, and that rare quality—genuine wonder at space exploration. Morally complex, beautifully realized worlds, and a cast you actually care about.

But Starts slow. First season feels like setup. The politics and jargon can feel dense if you're not in the mood for worldbuilding.

Severance2022

Eerie, elegant premise about workers who surgically separate work and home memories. Ben Stiller directs with precision. A meditation on labor, identity, and what we owe ourselves.

But Second season hasn't aired yet; first season ends on a note that demands resolution you can't get. Deliberately slow and atmospheric.

The Outer Limits1995

Classic anthology series that influenced everything. Each episode a self-contained sci-fi tale; at least half are genuinely unsettling and imaginative. The raw creativity of early television at work.

But Wildly uneven. Low budgets show. Some episodes are dated, some are dull, and the acting ranges wildly.

The Time Tunnel1966

Charming, earnest 1960s adventure through history and alternate worlds. Two scientists trapped in time, endless high-concept scenarios. Pure, unpretentious entertainment.

But Kitschy by design. Budget constraints are obvious. Plots are thin and often silly. Some find the period charm works; others find it wearing.

Arrival2016

Linguist must communicate with aliens to prevent war. Thoughtful, moving, visually stunning. Denis Villeneuve brings philosophical weight to first-contact sci-fi without sacrificing emotion or wonder.

But Quiet and contemplative rather than thrilling. The central twist is the film's entire point; some find it overstated rather than profound.

Memoria2021

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's meditation on memory, loss, and time. A woman hears a mysterious sound; nothing is explained; everything reverberates. Haunting, lyrical, unforgettable for those on its wavelength.

But Experimental, slow, and fundamentally uninterested in plot or clarity. Demands patience and a willingness to feel rather than understand.

Annihilation2018

Both are about discovery and transgression. A hidden chamber changes everything you thought you knew; the Shimmer does the same. Both ask: what happens when we find something we're not equipped to understand?

A shimmer descends on a coastline, nature warps into something alien, and a team enters to understand why. Dreamlike, visually gorgeous, soundtracked by dread. Intellectual sci-fi that feels visceral.

But Abstract and oblique; refuses clear explanations. Based on a book but reshaped significantly. Ends in ways that won't satisfy those wanting tidy resolution.

The Adam Project2022

Both feature older characters grappling with legacy and meaning. Both find profundity in small domestic moments. The time-travel and alien worlds matter less than what we're willing to protect and preserve.

Ryan Reynolds plays a time-traveling pilot who meets his younger self. Leans hard into heart rather than action—a surprisingly earnest story about fatherhood, purpose, and love. Funny, warm, and genuinely moving.

But Action-comedy that thinks it's more profound than it is. Relies on sentiment and family drama that some find saccharine. Lighter fare than its premise suggests.
