Phantom
Other titles called Phantom: the 1922 film.
A haunted Soviet submarine captain commands a Cold War ghost mission that might start World War III. Ed Harris carries this tense, claustrophobic thriller through impossible choices and moral ambiguity. It's for people who love submarines, espionage, and the weight of command—smart genre work that trusts its premise.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like submarine claustrophobia and slow-burn Cold War paranoia, where the tension comes from men in cramped steel rooms second-guessing one another rather than from explosions.
Skip it if your patience runs thin with murky, under-explained plotting and a drifting pace; the mystery is the point, so wanting crisp clarity will frustrate you.
What it asks of you: At 99 minutes, it asks for a slow, murky build and steady attention, with few release valves and dialogue that rewards close listening.

Crimson Tide1995
Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman locked in a submarine command crisis that builds unbearable tension through dialogue and ideology. The confined space amplifies every decision. A masterclass in escalation.
But Relies on military procedures and technical jargon that can feel dry if you're not already invested in the scenario.

Das Boot1981
The definitive submarine film: a German U-boat crew on a doomed mission, shot with documentary precision and human claustrophobia. Nothing comes close to its grip or its humanity inside the metal tube.
But Three-hour German war film with subtitles and no clear heroes—some find it slow-burn until the final act arrives.

The Hunt for Red October1990
Sean Connery captains a rogue Soviet submarine in a cat-and-mouse game with the US Navy. Smart, paced perfectly, and it actually makes the technical detail feel like tension rather than procedure.
But The Tom Clancy source material shows; it can feel like a military briefing wrapped in Hollywood glamour rather than lived experience.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Ghostland2018
Both titles play with the word 'haunted' literally: Laugier explores psychological haunting as self-inflicted legacy, much as Harris's captain is haunted by ghosts of his own making and command decisions.
Pascal Laugier's meditation on trauma, memory, and unreliable narrative told through a haunted-house film that isn't really a haunted-house film. Deeply unsettling in ways that linger for days.
But Extremely dark, violent toward women, and deliberately ambiguous in a way that frustrates viewers wanting resolution or clarity.

Fail Safe1964
Black-and-white nuclear anxiety at its purest: an American bomber headed toward Moscow cannot be recalled. The stakes are absolute, the logic is cold, and Henry Fonda carries unbearable weight as the president.
But Made in 1964, so the technology looks ancient and some of the gender politics are uncomfortable by today's standards.

K-19: The Widowmaker2002
Harrison Ford as a Soviet submarine captain facing a reactor crisis that could trigger nuclear war. Real historical incident, genuine tension, and Ford playing a man trapped by duty over survival instinct.
But Splits focus between the technical crisis and Ford's character arc, so neither quite lands with maximum impact.

The Thin Red Line1998
Terrence Malick's meditation on command, mortality, and conscience during a single battle. Philosophical rather than plot-driven; it captures the interior weight of leadership under impossible circumstances.
But Notoriously slow and introspective with voice-over philosophy that reads as pretentious if you're after plot momentum.

Submarine2011
A teenage boy in Wales wages his own cold war against the world. It's intimate and obsessive, capturing the paranoid logic of command in miniature—hilarious and heartbreaking at once.
But British indie comedy-drama about a teenager, so tonal whiplash if you're expecting thriller tension. Very narrow emotional register.

Beneath2007
A small submarine crew on a deep-sea research mission finds something that shouldn't exist. Claustrophobic sci-fi horror that understands how pressure and isolation scramble judgment.
But B-movie special effects and creature design that look cheap; the script sometimes slides into silly dialogue that undercuts the tension.

Stalker1979
Both are Russian-inflected stories about men carrying impossible burdens through restricted spaces, where the real enemy is internal and the mission's true purpose remains deliberately obscured.
Andrei Tarkovsky's Russian sci-fi masterpiece: a guide leads two men through a mysterious zone toward a room that grants wishes. Meditative, slow, and philosophically dense—about desire, faith, and the weight of choice.
But Glacially paced, dialogue-heavy, no action or plot momentum. If you're not ready for a 163-minute meditation on desire, you will fall asleep.
