Bulgasal: Immortal Souls
A supernatural romance sprawling across 600 years, where an immortal creature and a woman haunted by past-life memories circle each other through time. Korean gothic in mood, deeply invested in grief and the weight of endless recurrence. Built on a slow-burn intensity that asks whether love can survive eternity, and whether remembering everything means you're truly living at all.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a romance tangled up with centuries of memory, where a love story keeps resurfacing across lifetimes and the tone shifts between tender, grim and gently comic.
Skip it if you find the mix of tender romance and bloodthirsty fantasy hard to hold together, or you want a tight, fast plot rather than a slow build across many episodes.
What it asks of you: Slow lingering is its default: long quiet scenes, old grief given room, and attraction that builds over episodes rather than arriving at once, so patience pays off.

Alchemy of Souls2022
A Korean fantasy romance with similar aesthetic richness and emotional depth. Magic system, gorgeous cinematography, and characters whose love is tested across impossible circumstances. Equally committed to both spectacle and intimate feeling.
But Lighter in tone overall, and the plot mechanics are sometimes more straightforward than Bulgasal's layered mythology.

Tale of the Nine Tailed2020
Another Korean supernatural romance where a nine-tailed fox and a woman entangle across lives and lifetimes. Same melancholy elegance, same willingness to sit with dread and longing in equal measure. Stunning production design.
But The plot can feel repetitive once you sense where it's going. Second half pacing drags.

Eternal Love of Dream2020
Chinese xianxia drama with the same core engine: lovers separated by immortality, magic, reincarnation echoing through centuries. Lavish and intricate. If you loved Bulgasal's scope, this delivers that cosmic romanticism.
But Much longer (58 episodes), and the mythology can be genuinely hard to follow without a wiki open.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Eternal Husband1946
Both examine how love and resentment can fuse into something that transcends time and keeps two people locked together—one through literal reincarnation, one through obsession and memory.
A Russian film (based on Dostoevsky) where a man confronts another man who loved the same woman he did, and their complicated bond becomes a kind of dark dance across years and selves. No fantasy—it's purely psychological—but it has Bulgasal's meditation on whether identity survives the weight of the past.
But Bleak, slow, and offers no catharsis. The men are often despicable. Not even slightly entertaining.

Odds Against Tomorrow1959
Korean drama about connection across existential divides—here, between the living and a grim reaper. Doesn't have the fantasy scope of Bulgasal, but shares its emotional architecture: grief, second chances, whether bonds matter when time is infinite.
But Far more contemporary and intimate than mythic. If you want more spectacle, this will feel small.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo2016
A modern woman reincarnates into ancient Korea with memories of a past life, caught in political intrigue and a love that transcends time. Epochal in scope, genuinely haunting in its best moments. For anyone who loves the reincarnation mechanics.
But Divisive ending. Some viewers feel cheated. Melodrama can overwhelm plot logic.

The Bride of Habaek 20172017
A god forced to live as a human falls for a woman with a secret past. Mythology, romance, and the surreality of immortal beings navigating mortality. Visually ambitious and weird in the best ways.
But The mythology is confusing and the pacing uneven. Sometimes it feels like it's fighting itself.

Doom at Your Service2021
A woman accidentally curses herself to meet a manifestation of doom itself. Their relationship unfolds across time and circumstances, with real consequences and genuine dread underneath the supernatural romance.
But Tries to balance melodrama and horror without always succeeding. Tonal whiplash in places.

Only the Animals2019
Both stories prove that what looks like separate lives is actually one long, looped story—the form of the narrative itself embodies their philosophical obsession.
A French thriller that rewrites its own narrative across multiple timelines and perspectives, gradually revealing how connected its characters have always been. Structurally dazzling, with the same sense of fate and inevitability that haunts Bulgasal.
But The trickery can feel cold and clever rather than moving. Some viewers resent being manipulated by the structure.

Phantom2013
Both are preoccupied with how a person can be haunted by their own past selves, and whether redemption is even possible when you carry centuries—or just one crucial moment—with you forever.
A Russian spy film where a Soviet submarine captain becomes haunted by the ghost of a submarine he served on decades earlier. Obsession across time, cold war paranoia, and the weight of choices that echo forever. Strange, hypnotic, visually gorgeous.
But Slow, sometimes cryptic. The politics require historical knowledge. Not a conventional thriller despite the premise.
