Eternal Love of Dream
A sweeping fantasy romance spanning two millennia: a fox queen and an immortal god navigate devotion, duty, and desire across reincarnations. Lush production, operatic emotion, and intricate celestial politics make this a love story for those who want their romance cosmic and their stakes existential. For fans of elaborate world-building and characters who love so hard it breaks them.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love a slow-burning, sprawling romance where devotion is measured across centuries and the fantasy scenery carries as much weight as the swooning, with a lead pair whose chemistry is the whole point.
Skip it if you want a tight, fast plot; at 56 episodes of roughly 45 minutes, the story leans on long stretches of longing, reunion and misunderstanding that can feel repetitive.
What it asks of you: Plan for a long commitment, around forty hours, with patience for gradual pacing and a tone that stays earnest and melodramatic rather than light or brisk.

Once Upon a Time2017
The spiritual predecessor to this story—another epic of immortal love across centuries, with similarly gorgeous sets, a fox heroine, and the kind of devotion that survives death itself. Essential if you loved Eternal Love of Dream.
But Older production values show; pacing is deliberately slow and meditative, which works beautifully or feels glacial depending on your mood.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo2016
Time-displaced heroine navigates political intrigue and impossible choices between duty and love in an imperial court. Shares the moral complexity and emotional devastation, with stakes that feel genuinely tragic rather than romantic.
But The historical Korean setting may feel less fantastical than you want, and the romance develops slowly beneath layers of court machinations.

Heaven Official's Blessing2020
A celestial love story told through mystery and found family, with a supernatural lead who refuses conventional heroism. Shares the Chinese fantasy vocabulary and that sense of love as cosmic force, but lighter in tone.
But The mystery subplot demands more attention than pure romance fans might want to give; the pacing is uneven.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Love in the Moonlight2016
Both explore love as a secret you carry, and the exquisite pain of devotion across an impossible gulf. One is cosmic, one is intimate—same fire, different temperature.
Korean historical romance in which a servant girl and a crown prince fall in love while she disguises her gender and he remains unaware of her true feelings. The emotional restraint—all meaning carried in glances and silences—is the opposite of Eternal Love's operatic grandeur, yet the devotion is just as complete.
But The historical setting is grounded and intimate rather than fantastical; the pacing is meditative to the point of stillness.

Jade Dynasty2019
Mythical cultivation romance with similar visual splendour and a protagonist pair separated by fate, sect politics, and personal tragedy. The emotional core is genuinely wrenching.
But Earlier episodes feel sluggish; the story pivots away from its original love dynamic, which disappointed some viewers.

The Untamed2019
Supernatural drama about loyalty and forbidden connection set in a wuxia world of demonic cultivation. Obsessive devotion here takes dark, complicated forms—less traditionally romantic but equally consuming.
But Violence and trauma are central rather than peripheral; the romance is coded and subtextual rather than explicit.

Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost2018
Demon heroine and celestial male lead fall into love amid prophecy and destruction. Another story where love is the weapon and the wound, with costumes and effects that rival the best.
But The narrative becomes repetitive in the second half; some plot threads resolve unsatisfyingly.

Douluo Continent2021
Both build their romance within an elaborate system of celestial/magical rules. But where Eternal Love asks 'can love survive everything?', Douluo asks 'can love be built from nothing?'—a different architecture of the same obsession.
Animated adaptation of a gaming-world novel with a hero discovering his power and purpose through a partnership that becomes romantic. The action is spectacular and the world-building intricate; less about reincarnation and more about two people building something new from nothing.
But It's animated rather than live-action; the early episodes prioritize exposition and training montages over character development.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire2019
Both understand obsession as the centre of the story, but this film knows that distance and finitude are what make love absolute. Eternal Love spans millennia; this spans days. The intensity is identical.
A painter and her subject fall in love in 1770s Brittany across eighteen days, knowing it's temporary. Extraordinarily beautiful, emotionally devastating, with devotion that crystallizes precisely because it's bounded by time. The opposite of immortal love—all the more precious for its mortality.
But French-language period drama, no supernatural elements, and the romance exists in restraint and what's unsaid. If you're watching for spectacle, this will feel austere.
