Joy of Life

A sweeping Chinese historical drama following Fan Xian from sheltered youth to cunning player in a dangerous imperial court. Part coming-of-age story, part political thriller, it balances intimate character moments with intricate court machinations. Gorgeously shot, funny when it wants to be, and genuinely invested in what makes its protagonist tick. For anyone who loved the scope and complexity of prestige dramas but wants something that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a long, patient ascent story where a young hero grows through hard lessons, loyal friends and court intrigue, told in a warm, sprawling historical-fantasy register.

Skip it if the pace is leisurely over 82 episodes of about 45 minutes each, so a tight, fast plot will test your patience.

What it asks of you: Its shape is a long haul: roughly eighty-two episodes over two seasons, each near forty-five minutes, with slow stretches between the bigger moments.

Nirvana in Fire2015

The gold standard for Chinese historical drama. A brilliant strategist returns from exile to navigate court politics and avenge wrongs. If you want to know what Asian prestige television can achieve, this is it.

But Slower burn than Joy of Life, especially early on. The political intrigue requires real attention; you cannot half-watch it.

The Untamed2019

A sprawling fantasy martial arts epic with the same gorgeous production values and ensemble character work. Romance, magic systems, and genuinely devastating character arcs. The kind of show that swallows whole weeks.

But The CGI is inconsistent, and its 50-episode length means some plots meander. The central romance might feel slow if you're impatient for resolution.

Madonna: Rebel Heart Tour2016

Another period drama about a young person navigating power structures and discovering their own agency. Sharper in tone than Joy of Life, mordant, with excellent supporting characters. Real stakes, real costs.

But Shorter and less elaborate than Joy of Life—if you want epic scope, this feels slightly more intimate in scale. The pacing is brisk to the point of occasionally feeling rushed.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Long Good Friday1980

Both follow a protagonist who believed they understood the rules of their world, only to discover the rules have changed and the game is far deeper than they thought. Xian's education through loss mirrors this exactly.

A tight, brutal British thriller about a crime boss's Easter weekend going catastrophically wrong. Bob Hoskins at his most coiled and intelligent, every scene wound like a spring. Proof that you don't need 45 episodes to generate real stakes—ninety minutes of perfect control.

But Made in 1980, it looks and sounds like it. No modern conveniences, no safety net. The violence is sudden and brutal, not stylized. By the end, everything feels genuinely lost.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo2016

A Korean-Chinese co-production following a protagonist yanked into historical court intrigue, learning to survive through intelligence and alliances. Beautiful production, excellent supporting cast, emotional depth that catches you off guard.

But The ending is contentious and divisive among fans. Time-travel premise feels like it was added just to justify the premise, and it drags emotional weight in weird directions.

Legend of Fei2020

A young woman from a martial arts sect enters the wider world and discovers the gulf between what she was taught and how power actually works. Smart, funny, and genuinely romantic in a way that feels earned rather than imposed.

But Visual effects are sometimes cheap-looking. The plot meanders in the middle season, and some character pivots feel unearned despite strong acting.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame2010

A young woman infiltrates a rebel group by posing as a man, navigates shifting loyalties, and discovers her own capacities. Lush cinematography, morally complex characters, genuine tension between political ideology and personal connection.

But Smaller budget than Joy of Life shows in the visuals. Pacing stutters in the second half as it tries to resolve too many plot threads.

Eternal Love of Dream2020

A epic fantasy historical drama about reincarnation, war, and the question of whether love can survive when your circumstances keep changing. Visually stunning, emotionally committed, with excellent ensemble work.

But The reincarnation framing means you're watching similar plot beats twice. If you need action to maintain interest, there are long stretches of dialogue and relationship building.

Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost2018

A demon woman and a heavenly prince navigate celestial politics and class conflict through a romance that matters. Lush production, interesting magic system, and a willingness to let its characters suffer real consequences for their choices.

But The plot relies heavily on misunderstandings and people not talking to each other. Some viewers find the central romance overshadows the political intrigue.

Andor2022

Both examine how a young person learns that the world is controlled by people with hidden agendas, and how that knowledge changes who they become. Both suggest that knowledge itself is dangerous, and wisdom means learning to live with what you cannot fix.

A Star Wars prequel that operates like a Cold War spy thriller. A man with a murky past slowly becomes radicalized by injustice. Slower, grittier, more interested in how power corrupts institutions than in spectacle. Writing and craft that will rewire your expectations.

But Does not feel like Star Wars. No heroic music, no clear heroes, lots of bureaucratic tedium that some audiences mistake for boredom. First episode is deliberately flat.
