Legend of Fei

A Chinese wuxia drama following two young martial artists rising through a dangerous world of sects, betrayals, and blood debts. Lavish action sequences anchor a story about love, loyalty, and the cost of becoming a legend. Sweeping, romantic, and unapologetically operatic—perfect if you want to lose yourself in intricate fight choreography and period melodrama.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy slow-burn wuxia where characters are shaped over dozens of hour-long episodes and the fights grow out of who they are.

Skip it if you want fast, punchy action or a tidy runtime, because at 51 hour-long episodes this asks for a long commitment before its pace finds its footing.

What it asks of you: Expect a commitment measured in weeks: fifty-one hour-long episodes, unhurried in the middle, with the emotional weight accumulating rather than arriving in bursts.

The Untamed2019

The gold standard of modern wuxia: intricate politics, beautiful fight scenes, and two leads with extraordinary chemistry. A massive ensemble and mythology that deepens with each episode. If you loved the emotional core of Legend of Fei, this goes deeper.

But Nearly 50 episodes is a commitment. The source material censorship creates some narrative gaps that devoted fans still debate.

Eternal Love of Dream2020

Another lush period romance with complex martial arts sequences and a female lead who is genuinely formidable in combat. The production design is sumptuous and the emotional stakes feel real, not just costumery.

But The plot relies heavily on misunderstandings and separated lovers. If you hate that trope, this will test your patience.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon2000

The film that defined modern wuxia for Western audiences, with fight choreography so beautiful it's almost balletic. A love story wrapped in a story about duty and sacrifice. Ang Lee's vision is utterly singular.

But The pacing is meditative rather than propulsive. Some find it too slow; others find that the point. Also only two hours—a very different experience from a series.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Millennium Actress2002

Both explore what it costs to become legendary: the blurring of identity, the sacrifice of self, the way a life can become mythic. Millennium Actress does it through a woman's entire life in cinema; Legend of Fei does it through one story of martial ascent.

An animated film about an actress's life, which is also about cinema itself. The form shifts constantly—documentary, period drama, action, romance—all in 87 minutes. It captures the obsessive, transformative power of chasing a legend across time, which is exactly what Zhou Fei's story is about, just more literally.

But It's experimental and abstract. If you want straightforward narrative and don't speak Japanese, the conceptual nature might feel distant. Also hand-drawn animation, not live-action fantasy.

Shadow2018

A Chinese martial arts masterpiece about duality and ambition, with monochromatic cinematography that's hypnotic. The fight scenes are geometric and strange. Every frame looks like a painting.

But It's deliberately artificial and stylised. If you want gritty realism, this is the opposite. Also quite dark thematically.

Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost2018

A fantasy romance with excellent chemistry between leads and some genuinely inventive action sequences. The mythology is intricate without being impenetrable, and the emotional payoff lands hard.

But 58 episodes, and it does feel that long in stretches. The final arc divides viewers; some find it transcendent, others exhausted.

The Rise of Phoenixes2018

A wuxia-inflected political drama with one of the best female characters in the genre. The action is secondary to the scheming, but the scheming is magnificent. Morally complex and unsettling.

But It's grim and sometimes brutal. The romance is secondary. If you're watching for the love story, you might feel cheated.

Zhu Xian2022

Based on beloved source material, with a protagonist learning martial arts from the ground up. Rich mythology and some truly stunning sequences. A younger cast bringing energy and genuine stakes to sect politics.

But Trying to adapt hundreds of hours of game and novel into a series creates pacing issues. Hardcore fans found the streamlining frustrating.

Handsome Siblings2020

A stylish wuxia with good humour and inventive choreography. The mystery of the main characters' origins unfolds genuinely. Fun without being frivolous, and mercifully paced at 36 episodes.

But It doesn't quite have the emotional weight of the best in the genre. The ending polarised viewers. Some found it clever, others contrived.
