Smile PreCure!
- Fairy tale
- Superhero
- Light-hearted
Smile PreCure! follows five ordinary girls who transform into magical warriors to protect both Earth and a fairy-tale kingdom from an evil emperor. It's bright, energetic, and built for children, with character-driven action and genuine emotional stakes beneath the colorful surface. A show about friendship, courage, and finding joy even when things seem dark.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love bright, bouncy magical-girl battles where the fun lives in the transformations, a candy-colored fairy-tale world, and a team of heroes who meet everything with unembarrassed sincerity.
Skip it if you want gritty stakes or a slow-burn mystery, since this is a bright, episodic kids' show whose fights and lessons arrive on a predictable, reliably cheerful schedule.
What it asks of you: A long run of roughly half-hour episodes, forty-eight in all, with cheerful pacing that stays light even when the stakes rise.

If you liked this
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon1992
The template for everything Smile PreCure does: girls discovering their powers, learning to work as a team, and growing into their heroism. The emotional core—friendship as actual strength—runs just as deep here.
But Eighties aesthetic and pacing that can feel slow if you're used to modern anime. Some episodes genuinely test your patience.

Cardcaptor Sakura1998
Same warmth and intelligence about growing up while saving the world. Sakura's learning curve mirrors the PreCure girls' journey, and the show trusts its audience to care about character over spectacle.
But Very episodic for long stretches. If you need plot momentum, you'll find yourself waiting.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Deconstructs the magical girl formula with devastating intelligence. Takes the 'collecting power' concept and asks hard questions about what that cost actually means. A masterclass in emotional weight.
But Tonal whiplash—it starts gentle then goes somewhere genuinely dark. Not for viewers who want their magical girl shows to stay bright.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Little Witch Academia2017
Both center on girls discovering collective power through friendship and learning rather than innate destiny. The transformation happens internally before it ever looks flashy.
Not magical girls fighting evil, but magical girls learning their craft—more Dumbledore than Sailor Moon. Same warmth and character focus as Smile PreCure, but the engine is education and discovery rather than combat. Utterly joyful.
But Plot is minimal and deliberately so. If you need a strong through-line, this will feel slight.

More like this (6)
Dragon Ball1986
Adventure and teamwork as the real adventure—the same engine Smile PreCure uses. Goofy, warm, genuinely funny, and the fights actually matter because you care about these people.
But Glacially paced by modern standards, with entire arcs that exist mainly as filler. Commitment required.

The Owl House2020
American show that learned from Pretty Cure: a diverse cast, genuine stakes, humor that works for kids and adults, and the understanding that magical action means nothing without relationships. Sharp and surprisingly emotional.
But Cancellation cut the story short. You'll feel the incompleteness, and it stings.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018
Another Western show that studied the formula. Found family, magical teamwork, stunning animation, and character arcs that actually mean something. The show commits to its emotional storytelling.
But First season is uneven. The show improves significantly, but you have to survive the setup to get there.

Kill la Kill2013
Take magical girl action, amplify it to eleven, and make it formally wild. Pure kinetic energy, gorgeous animation, and a story about reclaiming power from systems designed to control you. A fever dream of a show.
But Deliberately provocative and chaotic. If you want restraint or subtlety, this is the opposite. Also extremely stylized—some find it exhausting rather than exhilarating.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997
The avant-garde magical girl story that influenced everything since. Formal experimentation, philosophical depth, and a willingness to make the viewer work. Endlessly rewatchable and interpretable.
But Deliberately obtuse and repetitive. The show asks you to read its formalism as meaning—if you want straightforward narrative, you'll be frustrated.

Senki Zesshou Symphogear2011
Both treat magical girl action as a form of collaborative expression where individual girls become stronger through connection. Both find genuine philosophy in what could be dismissed as fluff.
Japanese magical girl action where the heroines are literally powered by music and singing. Absolutely absurd, visually stunning, and it somehow makes you believe that girls in armor harmonizing can save the world. Earnest to the point of transcendence.
But Tonal whiplash between sincere emotion and complete ridiculousness. If that doesn't appeal to you, it'll feel tonally confused.
