Pretty Cure All Stars DX: Everyone Is a Friend - A Miracle All Pretty Cures Together

A 70-minute crossover film where multiple generations of Pretty Cure magical girls unite to fight an unprecedented threat. It's a love letter to the franchise's history, packed with transformation sequences, team-ups, and the kind of earnest joy that defines the series. Made for devoted fans, but welcoming enough that newcomers can enjoy the spectacle of dozens of heroines fighting side by side.

HeartCatch PreCure! the Movie: Fashion Show in the City of Flowers!?2010

Widely considered the franchise's artistic and narrative peak. Gorgeous animation, genuine character development, and a story that builds to something genuinely moving. A complete series that works brilliantly on its own.

But It's 49 episodes. Committing to the full run is a serious time investment, and the early episodes move slowly while establishing the core cast.

Yes! Precure 5: The Great Miracle Adventure in the Country of Mirrors2007

The show that proved the franchise could sustain itself beyond its debut. Five leads instead of three, better animation budgets, and episodes that balance humor, action, and real stakes. This is where Pretty Cure grew up.

But The first 20 episodes are genuinely rough—janky animation and repetitive plotting. It finds its feet but takes patience.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon1992

The spiritual ancestor of everything Pretty Cure does. A group of ordinary girls who transform into warriors, develop real friendships, and save the world while managing school and crushes. Genre-defining in every way.

But The '90s anime production looks it. Even the modern redub can't entirely smooth over dated pacing and some genuinely uncomfortable fan service by today's standards.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997

Both use the magical girl framework to explore friendship and personal growth, but Utena weaponizes surrealism and philosophical inquiry where Pretty Cure uses earnestness and spectacle. Different registers, same DNA.

A 39-episode magical girl deconstruction that predates Madoka by 14 years. Surreal, symbolist, willing to break its own format entirely. A show that respects your intelligence and rewards rewatching.

But It's genuinely difficult. The narrative is abstract, the symbolism is dense, and the show expects you to work. Beautiful but demanding.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

Takes the magical girl formula and deconstructs it with surgical precision. Stunningly designed, genuinely suspenseful, and willing to go places most magical girl shows won't. Three films follow; all worth seeing.

But It's bleak in ways that will alienate anyone watching for the Pretty Cure formula. The tone shift is intentional and severe. Definitely not family viewing.

Tokyo Mew Mew2002

Contemporary with early Pretty Cure and cut from similar cloth: five girls with animal powers, transformation sequences, and a genuine found-family warmth. Colorful, earnest, and endearingly earnest about its own melodrama.

But Only 51 episodes were made before cancellation, and the ending is abrupt. The animation is inconsistent and sometimes actively rough.

Smile PreCure!2012

A return to Pretty Cure basics after the experimental Heartcatch era. Brighter in tone, sharper in comedy, and surprisingly good at character work. The fairy mascots are genuinely funny.

But It plays it safer than you might want. If you're looking for Heartcatch's emotional depth or narrative ambition, this won't deliver it.

Cardcaptor Sakura1998

The template for the modern magical girl show: one girl gaining powers gradually, school life and magic expertly balanced, and a romance subplot that actually matters. Nearly 30 years old and still feels fresh.

But The first season's episodic monster-of-the-week structure can drag. Patience pays off, but not immediately.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018

Both are about girls finding strength and courage through friendship and mutual support, but Pretty Cure achieves it through metaphor and magic while A Place Further does it through the real, ordinary courage of commitment and vulnerability.

Four girls on a trip to Antarctica. It's a journey-narrative animated comedy-drama that captures the same spirit of friendship and personal growth as Pretty Cure, but in a real-world, contemporary setting. Joyful and earned.

But There are no magical powers and no battles. If you're specifically craving spectacle, this grounds everything in logistical, emotional realism.
