Hirogaru Sky! Precure
Hirogaru Sky! Precure is the latest instalment in the venerable magical girl franchise, finding a group of ordinary girls transforming into superhero warriors to protect their world. It's bright, energetic, and built on the formula that's sustained Precure for two decades: comedy, friendship, spectacle, and genuine stakes. Perfect for longtime fans and newcomers willing to meet it where it lives—which is unapologetically joyful.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love the giddy pleasure of a magical girl transformation sequence and a team of friends who cheer each other on through a sunny, sincere adventure.
Skip it if you want a tight story with a clear arc, since this is a long, sunny run where the franchise formula is the main draw and the pleasures stay gentle.
What it asks of you: Settle in for fifty half-hour episodes, a weekly rhythm rather than a binge, with a light, bright tone that stays cheerful and asks for patience with repetition.

HeartCatch PreCure! the Movie: Fashion Show in the City of Flowers!?2010
Widely considered the peak of the franchise. Gorgeous animation, a tighter narrative arc, and characters whose personal growth mirrors their magical development. Heartfelt without being saccharine.
But Some find the pre-transformation banter slow. The early episodes lean harder on comedy than action.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica2011
Takes the magical girl formula and excavates its darkness, asking what the cost of power really is. Stunning direction and a twist that recontextualises everything. Essential viewing for anyone curious what happens when the genre grows teeth.
But Radically different tone from Precure. Darker, slower, and philosophically weightier. Some find it bleak.

Star☆Twinkle PreCure the Movie: Wish Upon a Song of Stars2019
Cosmic adventure with genuine cosmic scale. The girls travel between worlds, the villain's motivation is complicated, and the animation consistently delights. Smart pacing and character work that respects the audience's intelligence.
But Longer series. Takes time to establish its world, so patience required in the early stretch.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Owl House2020
Same core DNA—a girl finding herself through magic and friendship—but filtered through a completely different cultural lens and visual language, proving the formula transcends its origins.
A human girl stumbles into a demon realm and befriends a witch in training. Adventure, genuine horror moments, and relationships that develop with rare authenticity. Animation that swings between comedy and beauty. Genuinely moving about belonging.
But American rather than Japanese, which changes the flavour entirely. Some seasons rush. The cancellation means an unplanned ending.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon1992
The DNA of everything Precure is. Moon and her allies navigate identity, friendship, and responsibility while fighting apocalyptic threats. It shaped magical girl anime and still holds up—the emotional cores are real.
But '92 animation hasn't aged as gracefully as you might hope. Pacing can drag. The early episodes are genuinely rough.

Kill la Kill2013
Transformation sequences and uniform-based power-ups reconceived as anarchist rebellion. Absurdist, visually extravagant, and genuinely moving about identity and resistance. A masterclass in taking a silly premise seriously.
But Deliberately outrageous and crude. Designed to provoke. Not remotely appropriate for younger viewers despite its shounen energy.

Cardcaptor Sakura1998
Gentler than Precure but with equal heart. Sakura captures magical cards while navigating school life and a slowly-developed romance. Beautiful direction and a protagonist whose kindness is actually her strength.
But Very slow by modern standards. Episodic structure means little plot momentum. Some find it too sweet.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997
A girl transforms to fight for the girl she loves in a surreal, symbolism-dense castle. Gorgeous, weird, and genuinely profound about identity, power, and relationships. Anime at its most committed to strangeness.
But Deliberately cryptic and experimental. The repetitive structure irritates as many as it fascinates. Requires active, patient viewing.

Little Witch Academia2017
Akko attends magic school and discovers her power isn't innate talent but determination and friendship. Charming, funny, visually generous, and genuinely inspiring without a trace of condescension.
But Lighter stakes than Precure. If you want genuine peril and high drama, this prioritises warmth over threat.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Expands Madoka's world into something almost hopeful. Better animation than the original, more breathing room for its characters, and answers some of the universe's crueller questions.
But Requires Madoka viewing first. Uneven pacing in the middle section. Some plot threads feel unresolved.

Dororo2019
Strip away transformation sequences and cuteness and you have the same engine: two outsiders completing each other through loyalty and shared purpose. Precure in mourning clothes.
A scarred boy and a girl thief journey through Sengoku-era Japan fighting demons. Stunning, serious, gorgeously animated. Utterly unlike typical magical girl stuff—the tone is elegiac and contemplative. But the emotional architecture is identical: companionship in the dark.
But Violent and genuinely tragic. Precure's joy is absent. Set in historical Japan, which some find alienating. Not for anyone seeking lightness.
