Dororo

Other titles called Dororo: the 2007 film.

A samurai's son hunts the demons who own his body, reclaiming stolen organs one kill at a time. Dororo is brutal, gorgeously animated action with real emotional weight—a revenge quest that asks what humanity means when you're rebuilding yourself from nothing. For anyone who wants their anime violent and purposeful, not decorative.

TVMaze rating3.8

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want episodic, folklore-soaked revenge stories where the gore is frank but the spirit stays stubbornly warm, with a bit of sly humor beside the monster hunting.

Skip it if you find gore and graphic violence hard going, or want a slow, brooding epic; its repeated demon hunts and frequent bloodshed may wear thin.

What it asks of you: Two dozen episodes of about twenty-five minutes each, with brutal set pieces broken up by quiet road stretches; it moves in brisk, episodic bursts rather than one long build.

Demon Slayer2019

A similar aesthetic: stunning animation, a young hero fighting supernatural threats to save someone he loves, and battles that actually matter. The emotional core is as strong as the action spectacle.

But Much longer commitment—there are multiple seasons. Some find the pacing occasionally slow between fights.

Vinland Saga2019

Both are period-set revenge stories about warriors rebuilding themselves morally, not just physically. Vinland is even more ambitious thematically, exploring violence and redemption with the same gravity Dororo brings.

But Slower and more contemplative; if you're watching Dororo for the action, this will test your patience.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020

Equally assured animation and choreography. A young protagonist bound to a cursed power he didn't choose, fighting creatures to save others. The show respects both its action and its character stakes.

But Becomes increasingly mythological and complex as it goes; later seasons demand more investment in world-building.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Kamisama Dolls2011

Both protagonists wield inherited supernatural weapons they didn't choose, and both stories turn on the question of whether you can escape your family's sins.

An inherited curse—literal dolls that destroy on command—connects five people who must reckon with what their families made them. Like Dororo, it's about the violence you're born into and the choice to break that cycle. Wildly underrated.

But Only twelve episodes and it shows; the ending feels rushed and incomplete. Visually inconsistent, with animation that varies wildly between sequences.

Castlevania2017

Mature, gorgeously animated action set in a historical-fantasy world. Concerns itself with moral reckoning alongside spectacle, and the storytelling is lean and purposeful across all four seasons.

But Only loosely connected to the games; purists find it diverges too far. Some find the pacing uneven.

Bleach2004

An older shonen that shares Dororo's willingness to let action sequences breathe and matter. The early arcs especially have that same mix of personal stakes and supernatural adventure.

But Runs 366 episodes; later seasons are bloated and repetitive. The pacing can grind to a halt mid-arc.

Basilisk2006

A supernatural clan war that's unflinching about violence and mortality. Every episode feels consequential; characters you meet die, sometimes suddenly. That same sense of real cost.

But Darker and more nihilistic than Dororo; some find it bleak without purpose. The animation is visibly dated now.

Mob Psycho 1002016

A young man with inherited power he didn't ask for, learning to live with it and understand himself. The animation is inventive and the emotional intelligence is genuine. Funny without undercutting the serious stakes.

But More comedic in tone; if you're after pure intensity, it might feel too light. The superpowers are psychic rather than physical combat.

Hell Girl2005

Episodic supernatural horror with gorgeous, unsettling animation. Each story carries moral weight—what do people deserve when they've wronged you? It has Dororo's willingness to sit with difficult questions.

But Very slow and meditative; there's little plot momentum. Some episodes are stronger than others; it can feel repetitive.

Sword of the Stranger2007

A lean, beautifully animated samurai film about an orphan and a swordsman. The action is exceptional and purposeful; nothing feels wasted. If you want Dororo's sensibility in movie form, this is it.

But Only ninety minutes; some want more story. The plot is straightforward to the point of simplicity.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

Both are about young people paying the price for bargains made before their birth—their bodies and futures traded away by adults seeking power.

A deceptively simple magical-girl show that deconstructs the genre with the same ruthlessness Dororo brings to samurai revenge. Girls make bargains that cost them pieces of themselves. Beautiful, devastating, and only twelve episodes.

But Looks cute and childish for three episodes before it becomes something else entirely; some resent the bait-and-switch. The final two episodes require real engagement.

Princess Mononoke1997

Both pit a marked protagonist against supernatural forces while questioning whether the battle itself corrupts the victor—whether reclaiming what was stolen destroys the person reclaiming it.

A warrior cursed by a demon explores a world where humans and spirits wage war, asking whether victory means anything if you've lost your humanity. Miyazaki's most violent, most political film—operatic and intimate simultaneously.

But Three hours and demands attention; some find the plot secondary to atmosphere and theme. It's a film, not a series, so completely different pacing.
