Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Sibling's Bond

Demon Slayer's film debut distils the anime's opening arc into a gorgeous 105-minute origin story. Tanjiro's sister becomes a demon; he vows to save her. It's gorgeously animated sword-swinging and emotional devastation wrapped together, perfect for action lovers and anime newcomers alike.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a sword-and-demon story rendered in hand-drawn animation at its most lavish, and you don't mind a journey that spends its time on people before it delivers the spectacle.

Skip it if you want a complete, self-contained film, since this is five TV episodes stitched together and it stops partway along the road rather than resolving much of anything.

What it asks of you: Settle in for about an hour and three quarters of mostly unhurried scene-setting that erupts into bursts of finely animated combat, so the fights land hardest if you watch closely.

Jujutsu Kaisen 02021

Same studio, same flawless animation engine applied to a different powerhouse shonen. Yuji's origin story has the same mixture of humor, heartbreak, and absolutely unhinged fight choreography.

But It assumes you've seen the show, so the emotional stakes land harder if you haven't already met these characters.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes2018

Character-driven shonen action at its best. Deku and All Might's dynamic gets room to breathe, and the animation during fights is genuinely breathtaking without overshadowing character moments.

But Fairly inconsequential to the main story—if you need every film to matter plot-wise, this feels like a side mission.

Attack on Titan: The Roar of Awakening2018

Another gorgeous anime film that expands a TV arc with stunning battle animation and genuinely affecting character work. The stakes feel real even when you know the show's ultimate trajectory.

But It's a retelling of TV episodes rather than new material, and recaps can feel slow if you've already watched.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Promare2019

Both are 2019 releases that express their emotional stakes through extraordinary animation of combat, and both center characters defined by their refusal to give up on people society has abandoned.

A firefighter protagonist fighting destructive forces to protect the innocent. Same earnest sincerity as Demon Slayer, but expressed through insane, almost abstract action animation and a completely different genre (sci-fi action rather than dark fantasy).

But The plot is genuinely incoherent at times, and the visual style is so intense and rapid-fire it can feel exhausting rather than exhilarating.

Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale2017

A VR adventure that swings for spectacle without forgetting the emotional core. The animation is striking and the action sequences are inventive in ways the show sometimes isn't.

But The plot is fairly straightforward and doesn't add much thematic depth to the series.

Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale poster

Blue Exorcist2011

A darker, more focused spin on familiar shonen ingredients. Excellent character dynamics, surprisingly nuanced relationships between brothers and antagonists.

But It requires familiarity with the series, and it's slower and more introspective than the original.

Vinland Saga2019

A Viking epic with the same commitment to character development and emotional weight. Gorgeous direction, complex moral questions, and a protagonist who changes in response to suffering.

But It's grittier and bloodier, and the pacing is deliberately slow—this is a meditation, not a sprint.

Vinland Saga poster

Dororo2019

A young protagonist fighting demons to reclaim their body and agency. Outstanding animation, weird and wonderful creature design, and surprisingly tender emotional beats beneath the gore.

But It's visually darker and more grotesque than Demon Slayer, which some find off-putting. Also ends on an ambiguous note.

Fire Force2019

Over-the-top action animation, genuine humor, a protagonist with a clear mission and heart. If you want shonen energy without too much brooding, this delivers.

But The plot meanders and the fanservice is distracting. Also, the animation is inconsistent outside the best fight scenes.

The God of High School2020

Pure martial arts spectacle with animation so fluid it transcends the medium. Tournament action executed with genuine creativity and visual flair.

But Plot is nearly nonexistent and character development is minimal—this is about looking cool while fighting, nothing more.

The God of High School poster

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-2013

Both use animation as their primary storytelling tool and both ask: if you love someone, how far will you go to save them, even if it means defying destiny itself?

A magical girl anime that deconstructs its own genre with devastating precision. Gorgeous, inventive visual storytelling and a plot twist that reframes everything that came before it. Emotional devastation disguised as pretty colors.

But Requires watching the three-episode TV series first. More philosophical and deliberately paced than action-driven; can feel slow if you're expecting fights.

A Letter to Momo2012

Both center sibling bonds transformed by supernatural circumstances, but where Demon Slayer drives toward action and salvation, this one sits with grief and acceptance as the real journey.

A girl navigates grief and loneliness on a remote island, encountering spirits and learning to live with loss. Staggeringly beautiful hand-drawn animation, genuine emotional wisdom, and a completely different register from shonen action—this is quiet and meditative where Demon Slayer is urgent.

But Very slow. Almost nothing happens in the plot sense; if you need forward momentum, this will feel like static. Also less widely available than mainstream anime films.
