Last Night
Other titles called Last Night: the 1998 film.
A marriage thriller about a night when two people confront old flames and new temptations. Expertly constructed to make you question what fidelity means and whether a moment of weakness is a thing or a symptom. It trusts you to sit with ambiguity. For anyone who's ever wondered what they'd do in that scenario.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love grown-up relationship drama built from loaded conversations and small glances, where the tension lives in what people don't say and you'd rather sit with ambiguity than be handed a verdict.
Skip it if you need a clear moral arc or plenty of plot, since this is mostly talk, stillness and one long night, and its restraint can feel like nothing is moving.
What it asks of you: A slow, mostly interior evening that stays close to two faces and rarely cuts away, its unease building quietly instead of arriving in set pieces.

Before Sunrise1995
A whole movie of two people discovering they have electric chemistry, and both are already spoken for. Linklater's dialogue crackles with the specific thrill of connection that arrives when it shouldn't. The best film about what temptation actually feels like.
But It's entirely talk. If you need plot momentum or spectacle, you'll find it glacial and self-absorbed.

Secretary2002
A domestic relationship film that's utterly unafraid of desire and power dynamics. It finds darkness and tenderness in the same space. Gorgeous cinematography and a central performance that commits entirely to ambiguity.
But The sexual content is explicit and the film doesn't apologize for it. Some will find it exploitative; others transformative.

Closer2004
Four people circling each other, each one crossing lines they swore they wouldn't. Mike Nichols directing betrayal with surgical precision. The script is scalpel-sharp and the performances are unflinching.
But It's punishingly bleak and everyone is pretty terrible. If you need someone to root for, leave now.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Minari2021
Both films are about how proximity to the person you love can become its own kind of distance. How knowing someone deeply doesn't guarantee you'll choose them when tested.
A film about marriage as much as immigration. A couple betting everything on a dream, and their relationship buckling under the weight of that gamble. It's about fidelity to a person versus fidelity to an ambition. Tender and devastating.
But It's slow and internal. The conflict is psychological rather than dramatic, and some will find that static.

Unfaithful2002
Adrian Lyne's masterclass in how a single transgression ripples outward. The affair itself is filmed with genuine eroticism, but the film is really about consequence. Diane Lane gives a career-best performance.
But The pacing drags in the second half. It knows what it's doing thematically but sometimes belabors the point.

A Separation2011
A couple deciding whether to stay together, told with documentary-like precision and devastating moral complexity. Every character is right and wrong simultaneously. Cinema of ideas that never feels like cinema of ideas.
But It's Iranian, subtitled, and very slow. The emotional pain is real and unrelenting.

Broken English2007
A woman in her forties weighs safety against passion. Tender and funny about why we sabotage ourselves. Parker Posey is luminous and the film doesn't condescend to its protagonist's desires or doubts.
But It's a quieter film about quieter stakes. Nothing is at risk except the protagonist's peace of mind.

The Good Girl2002
Jennifer Aniston's most interesting film role, playing a woman whose infidelity is less a plot point than a symptom of a life that's suffocating her. Darkly funny about how we rationalize.
But It's indie and detached where you might want warmth. The tone can feel cold even when the content is intimate.

In the Mood for Love2000
Wong Kar-wai's meditation on attraction that never gets consummated, told through color and repetition. It's about what lives between two people when they never touch. Astonishingly beautiful.
But It's deliberately artificial and slow. If you want realism or plot momentum, you're watching the wrong film.

Contempt1963
Godard's film about a marriage cracking under the weight of temptation and infidelity. Bracingly intellectual but also genuinely about human hurt. Bardot and Piccoli are extraordinary together.
But It's a 1960s European art film. Long, self-conscious, and the dialogue can feel more like philosophy than people talking.

Courage Under Fire1996
Same structure—a partner discovering an unexpected connection to someone new—but it inverts every assumption you carry about which kind of temptation matters. A conversation with the original film.
Deepa Mehta's film about two women discovering they want each other more than the men they married. Urgent, sensual, and morally fearless. It remakes the temptation narrative entirely. Shot with genuine warmth.
But It's been heavily censored in various territories. The explicit content around female desire may feel transgressive or uncomfortable depending on your background.

The Girlfriend Experience2009
Both films ask whether a single night of transgression or temptation is the real crisis, or whether the real crisis is learning that betrayal was possible all along. What it means to know someone is capable of it.
Soderbergh's micro-budget experiment about a high-end escort navigating multiple relationships and the question of what fidelity means when your entire job is performance. Formally strange and genuinely about intimacy's cost.
But It's deliberately fragmented and stylized. The narrative is opaque and rewards patience. Sasha Grey's performance lacks conventional charisma.
