First Love
Other titles called First Love: the 2016 film.
A young man navigates first love and family rupture during the 2008 financial crisis. *First Love* is a sincere, modest drama about how external collapse mirrors internal upheaval—when everything falls apart at once, you discover who you actually are. It's for anyone who remembers that particular ache of wanting to hold onto something while the ground shifts.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you respond to quiet coming-of-age dramas where a first romance and a household strained by money trouble press on each other, and you don't mind lingering on small, uncertain moments.
Skip it if you need brisk plot or a clear arc, since this drifts through long stretches of mood and restraint, and its melancholy may feel more like waiting than building.
What it asks of you: Ninety-five minutes, unhurried and muted, with the emotional weight carried in glances and silences rather than big scenes; it wants patience more than attention to intricate plotting.

If you liked this
The Fault in Our Stars2014
A tender, unsentimental story about young people discovering themselves through love while contending with forces beyond their control. It earns its emotional weight without manipulating you.
But The YA romance framework might feel familiar or slight if you're looking for something with more narrative surprise.

Manchester by the Sea2016
A masterclass in how personal grief and economic collapse intertwine. Casey Affleck's performance shows a man hollowed by circumstance, unable to move forward. Raw and necessary.
But It's deliberately quiet and withholding. Some find this restraint affecting; others find it remote.

Moonlight2016
Three acts of a young Black man's life, each a study in how context shapes identity and desire. Visual, poetic, intimate without ever explaining itself. Transforms how you see coming-of-age.
But The oblique storytelling requires patience. Dialogue is sparse. If you prefer clarity and plot momentum, it will feel slow.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Killer of Sheep1978
Both films understand that financial precarity isn't background—it's the actual story, shaping desire, family bonds, and what it means to grow up.
Charles Burnett's experimental portrait of a young man working a brutal job while trying to love and be loved. Shot in black-and-white, fragmented and poetic. It invents a new language for showing class and dignity together.
But No conventional plot. No music for much of it. Requires you to meet it on its own terms; many won't.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower2012
A high school story that treats adolescent feeling as genuinely important—not something to mock or minimize. Smart, warm, and honest about how friendship and first love save us.
But The sincerity can tip toward precious if you're cynical about teen narratives. Some find the literary voiceover dated.

Ladybird Ladybird1994
Greta Gerwig's portrait of a young woman leaving home, caught between love for her family and desperate need to escape them. Funny, tender, unresolved in the best way.
But Very little *happens* in plot terms. The drama is entirely emotional and interpersonal. Some find that frustrating.

The Spectacular Now2013
A romance that understands that first love is rarely uncomplicated—desire, circumstance, and family all pull in different directions. Miles Teller is effortlessly charming and wounded.
But The third act doesn't land as forcefully as the setup. Some feel it abandons its own moral complexity.

A Ghost Story2017
An experimental meditation on time, loss, and how places hold memory. Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck explore what remains when everything else dissolves. Haunting and strange.
But It's deliberately obtuse and metaphorical. The pacing is glacial. If you want conventional narrative, this will frustrate you.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always2020
An intimate portrait of two young women navigating impossible circumstances with quiet courage. Eliza Hittman's camera is gentle but unflinching. A reminder that survival is its own story.
But Very slow and observational. There's a deliberate refusal of emotional catharsis that some find withholding.

Shelter2007
Two young artists find each other against a backdrop of family dysfunction and economic precarity. Sincere, beautifully shot, and unafraid to be earnest about connection.
But It's understated to the point of being static. Some find the pacing inert and the stakes unclear.

Aftersun2022
A coming-of-age story told from the perspective of recognizing what's being lost in real time. Both films grasp that first love and family rupture happen simultaneously.
A father and daughter spend one last holiday together. Shot like a home video, dreamlike and heartbreaking. Charlotte Wells creates a new form for memory and loss. Quietly devastating.
But The narrative is oblique and impressionistic. It circles rather than explains. The emotional payoff comes from patience, not plot.

Minari2021
Economic crisis—real or feared—forces families into new configurations. Both films show how external pressure reshapes who we are and what we can become.
A Korean-American family stakes everything on a farm in Arkansas. The film moves between the father's ambition, the son's adaptation, and the grandmother's arrival. It's a new-world story told with old-world feeling.
But Spans a longer timeline than *First Love* with multiple plot threads. Some find the editing abrupt; the tone shifts between humor and hardship quickly.
