Slow Horses is spy fiction with its knees scraped and its collar dirty — no gadgets, no glamour, just burnt-out MI5 rejects doing tedious surveillance while London occasionally tries to kill them. Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb is magnificently repulsive, the plotting is sharp and unsentimental, and the show trusts you to enjoy competence dressed up as failure. Funny, mean, and genuinely tense — for anyone who wants their espionage grubby rather than sleek.

But Glacially paced and demands total attention; if you want quips and momentum, this will feel like homework.

Harry Palmer is the ancestor of Slough House — the first spy hero defined by paperwork, bad pay and contempt from his superiors rather than tuxedos.

Michael Caine's bespectacled, grocery-shopping spy invented the anti-Bond decades before it was fashionable, and the film's dry procedural chill still feels startlingly modern.

But 1960s pacing and plotting will feel deliberately opaque if you're used to modern exposition.

The old-school British spy show Slow Horses is partly answering — earnest, brutal, willing to kill off characters you loved without warning, with real institutional dread.

But Dated effects and a straighter face than Slow Horses; the humour you're craving mostly isn't here.

Jed Mercurio's tight, paranoid thriller shares the same appetite for institutional rot and characters who are competent, damaged, and impossible to fully trust.

But Only six episodes and a single story — no ongoing world to sink into.

Line of Duty2012

Swap MI5 for anti-corruption police and you get the same moral murk — bureaucratic, procedural, and absolutely merciless about which characters survive.

But It's a slow-burn procedural with dense jargon; the payoff takes real patience.

A Cold War true story of betrayal within the Service, with the same sense that the enemy might be your own colleague, and Guy Pearce excellent as a traitor.

But More sombre and less funny — this one plays its history straight.

Espionage as marriage, and marriage as espionage — a slower, more devastating study of what a double life actually costs the people living it.

But A serious long-haul commitment; six seasons of dread with little of Slow Horses' comic relief.

A less starry, more procedural take on the same premise — CIA station politics, moles, and the daily grind of running human intelligence rather than shooting it out.

But Never quite reaches the same wit or memorability; a solid watch rather than a great one.

The Thick of It2005

Same institutional despair and contempt-fuelled dialogue, aimed at Whitehall rather than the Service — the comic mirror image of Slow Horses' bureaucratic misery.

If Jackson Lamb's insults are your favourite part, this is episode after episode of British government functionaries destroying each other with language, played entirely for laughs.

But It's straight political satire with no thriller plot at all — the espionage stakes you're here for simply aren't present.

Archer2009

The same premise — disgraced, dysfunctional operatives who shouldn't still have jobs — pushed into full cartoon farce, proving the setup survives almost any tonal extreme.

Animated, filthy, and gloriously stupid, it takes the washed-up-spy-agency setup and detonates it into pure gag-a-minute chaos, with surprisingly sharp writing underneath.

But Broad, crude, and often juvenile — if you want Slow Horses' tension and craft, this trades almost all of it for jokes.
