The Widow
- Action thriller
- Mystery
- Very dark
Kate Beckinsale plays a woman in hiding who spots her supposedly dead husband on television and vanishes into the Congo to confront him. It's a taut thriller that pivots between quiet devastation and high-stakes pursuit, grounded by Beckinsale's refusal to play victimhood—Georgia is damaged and dangerous, not helpless. For fans of character-driven suspense with real emotional weight.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like thrillers built on a woman's buried past, where the tension comes from what she is willing to do to get answers and the plot's twists land through character rather than spectacle.
Skip it if you want a brisk, tightly plotted chase, since this one stalls in its emotional beats and leans heavily on melodrama, with some stretches that feel more talky than urgent.
What it asks of you: Eight episodes of about forty-seven minutes each, so a weekend commitment, with a pace that lingers on grief and conversation before the action arrives in bursts.

The Fall2013
Stella Gibson hunts a serial killer across Belfast with the same magnetic intensity Georgia brings to her quest. Gillian Anderson commands every frame, and the cat-and-mouse game is both cerebral and visceral.
But It's bleak and methodical, sometimes slow. If you need constant plot momentum, this will test your patience.

The Americans2013
Two Soviet spies living as an American couple face constant moral fracture, hiding identities and lies like Georgia hides herself. Phenomenal performances and the slow erosion of compartmentalized lives will haunt you.
But Six seasons is a commitment. The paranoia and marital tension can be suffocating, which is the point—but that won't suit everyone.

Slow Horses2022
Gary Oldman leads a team of MI5 misfits through labyrinthine espionage with dry wit and genuine stakes. Like The Widow, it respects your intelligence and lets you sit with uncomfortable information.
But The plot requires attention. Look away for five minutes and you'll lose threads. Some viewers find the pace deliberate rather than atmospheric.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Nice Guys2016
Both are about identity fractured by trauma—one inward retreat, one fragmented presentation. Each asks: how do we recognize someone when they've stopped being themselves?
A docudrama about internet addiction and the death of Nic Sheff, shot across multiple media formats that blur reality and performance. Like The Widow, it's about someone lost in a persona, but here it's unflinching and formally inventive about how we disappear.
But The stylistic shifts are intentionally disorienting and the subject matter is devastating. It refuses to give you solid ground or a comfortable viewing experience.

The Night Manager2016
Tom Hiddleston and Tom Hardy in a Le Carré adaptation that brings you into luxury hotels and African locations with moral ambiguity everywhere. Slick, dangerous, and psychologically intricate like Georgia's unravelling.
But It's stylish to the point of abstraction sometimes. If you prefer plot clarity to mood and implication, it may frustrate.

In Treatment2008
Gabriel Byrne as a therapist wrestling with his own fractured life while holding others' secrets. The intimate intensity and the way it explores people who aren't who they appear mirrors Georgia's journey inward.
But It's almost entirely dialogue in small rooms. No action, no relief. The emotional claustrophobia is the whole point, and it's exhausting by design.

Killing Eve2018
Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh in a dark cat-and-mouse dance. Comer's sociopath and Oh's obsessive detective create a momentum that's hard to resist, with similar themes of dangerous women stepping outside the law.
But It becomes increasingly stylized and self-satisfied. The tonal shifts from comedy to horror can feel unearned, and the central relationship eventually overshadows plot coherence.

The Accident2019
Three families connected by a tragic accident in Wales, where secrets emerge and guilt reshapes everyone's lives. It has The Widow's sense that nothing is what it appears and trauma breaks open identities.
But The Welsh setting and complex timeline can feel claustrophobic and repetitive. Some threads resolve while others simply fade.

The Last of Us2023
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey on a survival journey across a broken landscape where trust is currency. It shares the emotional rawness and the sense that your protagonist will do whatever it takes to reach the truth.
But It's heavy on loss and grief, with quieter episodes that privilege atmosphere over plot. Not for viewers seeking consistent action or traditional catharsis.

The Expanse2015
Both center on ordinary people—a widow, a detective—pulled into larger conspiracies where governments and power brokers lied. Both ask: what do you owe the truth when the truth costs everything?
Political thriller in space where characters navigate competing loyalties and hidden agendas with real consequences. It has The Widow's willingness to make moral compromises feel inevitable and its female characters are complex, competent, and frequently furious.
But The early seasons have dated visual effects and dense world-building. The scale is vast; some find it exhausting rather than expansive.

Fleabag2016
Both feature women who've constructed false selves as protection and follow their slow, painful confrontation with who they actually are. Both refuse to let you look away from the person underneath the performance.
A six-episode season about a chaotic woman in London breaking the fourth wall, performing for us while emotionally corroding. Like Georgia, Fleabag is a persona built on survival, but this one is darkly hilarious and devastatingly honest about why we hide.
But The rapid-fire jokes and structural innovation aren't for everyone. If you prefer straightforward character drama, the self-consciousness reads as gimmicky.
