River Cartwright

River Cartwright is a once-promising MI5 officer now stuck at Slough House, the department's dumping ground for agents who've screwed up. He botched a training exercise badly enough to end his fast-track career, and he chafes at the humiliation daily — restless, sharp, convinced he's better than the failure that defines him now.

Jack Lowden plays him with a coiled, boyish impatience that makes River's arrogance sympathetic rather than grating — you believe he was good, and you believe he can't accept being sidelined. The show uses him as our entry point into Slough House's shabby world, and his hunger to matter again gives every mundane task an undertow of desperation.
