Television series

Carmen Sandiego

A stylish heist-adventure cartoon where a reformed thief becomes a Robin Hood figure, globe-trotting to outwit an evil organisation. It's zippy, witty, and beautifully animated—the kind of show that makes geography and clever plotting feel like an adventure. Smart enough for adults, fun enough for kids who like their cartoons to actually be clever.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy breezy globe-trotting capers where the thrill is the chase and a clever, unflappable heroine leads a team of savvy sidekicks.

Skip it if you want slow-burning drama or stakes that linger, since each episode is a brisk, short puzzle-and-chase built to stay light and repeatable.

What it asks of you: Little patience for stillness: episodes run about twenty-five minutes at a bright clip, four seasons and thirty-two of them in all, so it rewards a steady, easy binge.

Infinity Train2019

A serialised animated mystery where every episode unfolds a new puzzle aboard a train that shouldn't exist. Inventive, genuinely unpredictable, and manages to be both playful and surprisingly dark—it respects its audience's intelligence.

But The art style is deliberately weird and off-putting at first, and some episodes veer into genuinely unsettling territory. Not all the humour lands equally.

The Owl House2020

An adventure series about a girl trapped in a demon realm, mixing magical hijinks with real character work and genuine stakes. Funny, colourful, and emotionally earned in ways most kids' shows don't bother attempting.

But The early episodes feel a bit scattered before it finds its footing, and if you need constant action rather than character moments, it might feel slow.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018

A reboot that completely reimagines its source material with sharp writing, stunning animation, and a plot that actually builds toward something meaningful. Charming, funny, and unexpectedly moving.

But Some fans of the original find the tonal shift jarring, and it takes time to care about the characters. The final season divides people.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Lupin2021

Both centre on a charming, intelligent thief who outsmarts people through planning and style rather than violence. Same moral engine, wildly different register.

A French heist series where a gentleman thief methodically steals from the rich, each con unfolding like clockwork. Stylish, brilliantly plotted, and genuinely thrilling—it proves the con-artist format works in live-action with the same wit Carmen uses.

But It's live-action and significantly more serious in tone, with adult stakes and darker themes. If you want the cartoon lightness, this will feel like a tonal departure.

Arcane: League of Legends2021

A gorgeously animated series about two sisters on opposite sides of a conflict, blending heist energy with genuine emotional stakes. Treats its world and characters with real weight while remaining visually stunning and propulsive.

But It's darker and more violent than Carmen Sandiego, and the pacing in the middle can feel like setup. Heavy on lore if you're not a League of Legends player.

Arcane: League of Legends poster

Gravity Falls2012

A mystery-adventure where siblings uncover supernatural secrets in a creepy small town. It's cleverly plotted, genuinely funny, and builds to something genuinely satisfying—proof that serialised storytelling works in animation.

But The first season is lighter than later ones, so if you jump in expecting darkness you'll be disappointed early. Some people find the meta-humour exhausting.

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake2023

What starts as a silly adventure show becomes genuinely complex and emotionally intelligent. It's a masterclass in how to evolve without losing the core appeal, with wonderful world-building and real consequences.

But The early seasons are very silly in ways that don't aged brilliantly, and the show's 10-season length means commitment. Tone shifts dramatically as it progresses.

Amphibia2019

A girl stranded in a frog-filled world has to find her way home while making genuine friends. Sneakily smart about character and world-building, with humour that works for everyone and quiet emotional payoffs.

But The animation is deliberately stylised and sometimes inconsistent, and patience is required before plot threads actually pay off. Slower burn than Carmen Sandiego's pace.

Over the Garden Wall2014

A dark, beautifully crafted miniseries about two brothers lost in an autumn forest. Gorgeously animated, haunting, and packed with atmosphere—perfect if you want something that respects its audience in every frame.

But It's only five episodes so there's less to chew on, and it prioritises mood over plot. The deliberate pacing and creepiness alienate people wanting light adventure.

Craig of the Creek2018

Deceptively simple: kids exploring a creek and solving small mysteries. It's warm, genuinely funny, and captures what it felt like to have adventures in your own neighbourhood with real affection and detail.

But The stakes are deliberately small and personal, so if you need high-octane plotting or world-changing consequences, it's just a nice little show. The animation takes time to appreciate.

Knives Out2019

Both understand that a good con or mystery is about audience delight—seeing the mechanism work. Both prioritise the pleasure of watching a smart person think their way through a problem.

A murder mystery where every frame is delightful—clever plotting, a stellar cast chewing scenery, and a detective who actually solves things through intelligence. It's a heist film that respects the audience's brain while never feeling condescending.

But Some people find the self-aware cleverness exhausting, and the plot relies on you keeping track of details. At two hours thirty, it's a completely different commitment.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend2015

Both feature protagonists with double lives and hidden depths who are far smarter than people assume, and both use entertainment and misdirection to tell stories about people who don't fit neat categories.

A musical comedy-drama about a woman who moves across the country for a man and realises nothing is what it seemed. It's genuinely funny, has stunning musical numbers, and treats its characters with real compassion while satirising rom-com logic.

But The tonal shifts between comedy and genuine mental health drama throw some people, and the musical numbers aren't everyone's language. Watching someone make bad decisions repeatedly can feel uncomfortable.
