Sofia the First2013

The spiritual predecessor that sets up Elena's story. Sofia discovers the amulet and becomes Elena's bridge back to the world. Charming, musical, and genuinely warm about blended families and kindness.

But Aimed at slightly younger viewers, so the pacing is gentler and stakes feel lower. Some songs will stick in your head whether you want them to or not.

The Owl House2020

A young protagonist learning magic in a dangerous world, building a found family, and discovering their own strength. The animation is gorgeous, the humour lands for all ages, and it trusts its audience completely.

But Darker and more serialised than Elena. If you want whimsy over genuine peril, this swings harder into the latter.

Amphibia2019

A girl stranded in a magical world, learning to lead, making real friendships, and growing into herself. Character-driven, funny, beautifully animated, and surprisingly emotional without ever feeling manipulative.

But Also darker and more complex than Elena. The first season is slower-paced while it builds its world.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Carmen Sandiego2019

Both centre a female lead of colour reclaiming agency and building a team of loyal allies to challenge an unjust order. Both trust their audience to care about justice as much as adventure.

A heist adventure centred on a brilliant, principled woman outwitting corrupt powers and building a team. Faster-paced than Elena, gorgeously animated, stylish without being shallow, and genuinely smart about its own mythology.

But More episodic and less emotionally character-driven. If you're watching Elena for the growth and relationships, Carmen relies more on plot momentum and spectacle.

Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure2017

Another Disney series about a princess discovering who she really is beyond the crown. Gorgeous animation, excellent character work, and it genuinely respects both the comedy and the emotional journey.

But Cancelled after three seasons on a cliffhanger. The ending won't resolve everything you're hoping it will.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018

A princess story about power, identity, and discovering that you're stronger than you ever imagined. Funny, visually stunning, with real character depth and relationships that earn their weight.

But Heavily serialised and builds slowly. The first season is scene-setting; the payoff takes time. Also darker in tone overall.

The Dragon Prince2018

A fantasy world with magic, dragons, and young people learning that their inherited hatreds don't have to define them. Thoughtful about power and compassion, with gorgeous animation and genuinely tense moments.

But More serious in register than Elena. If you're after pure adventure without moral weight, this philosophises a lot.

Gravity Falls2012

A sibling duo uncovering mysteries in a strange town, building found family, and learning about courage and loyalty. Brilliantly written, genuinely funny, with real emotional stakes underneath the adventure.

But Concluded perfectly but abruptly. Also more focused on mystery-box plotting than character arcs, if that's not your thing.

Miraculous: Les aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir2015

A girl with magical powers protecting her city while navigating identity, friendship, and romance. Bright, silly, inventive episode concepts, and a genuinely invested fandom that suggests something's working underneath.

But The mythology is inconsistent, pacing varies wildly, and some creative decisions feel designed purely to frustrate. It's messier than it needs to be.

Craig of the Creek2018

Both understand that growing up means learning to lead not through dominance but through listening, compromise, and recognising that your friends make you stronger than you'd ever be alone.

A neighbourhood adventure series where kids solve problems through creativity, friendship, and genuine problem-solving. Warm, funny, beautifully drawn, and completely unpretentious about what it means to have friends who matter.

But Slower, smaller in scale, and less fantastical. No magic or high stakes—just real life and community. If you need spectacle, this will feel slight.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023

Both feature a young protagonist discovering that their inherited power and legacy come with the weight of protecting those they love, and both understand that true strength requires vulnerability and community.

A gorgeously animated fantasy series about a young man learning his power while fighting an ancient evil threatening everything he loves. Visually stunning, morally complex, with real stakes and relationships that matter.

But Violent, gothic, and aimed at adults. A completely different tone—where Elena is bright, this is dark. If you want warmth and levity, this isn't it.
