Television series
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake
A spinoff that finally centers the gender-swapped versions of Adventure Time's core cast, whisking them through the multiverse with Simon Petrikov in tow. It's sharper and more emotionally grounded than the original's whimsy, wrestling with identity and belonging. Perfect for people who loved Adventure Time but wanted something with more narrative spine and character depth.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love offbeat, emotionally blunt spin-offs where the jokes sit on top of real loneliness, and you want a sci-fi road trip that trusts you to keep up.
Skip it if you want a self-contained cartoon romp, since this is serialized, mythology-heavy and asks you to hold multiple timelines and a slow-building threat in your head.
What it asks of you: Its episodes are short, around twenty-four minutes, but they stack into a run of twenty over two seasons, so expect to keep track of the plot across many sittings.

The Owl House2020
A Disney show that grew into something genuinely dark and complex, balancing humor with real stakes and character arcs that demand emotional investment. The leads have chemistry as vivid as Fionna and Cake's.
But Later seasons lean heavily into serialized plot; if you want episodic adventures, the pacing might frustrate you.

Craig of the Creek2018
Deceptively gentle slice-of-life that finds genuine adventure and magic in the everyday. Warm, funny, character-driven—it reminds you why you loved Adventure Time in the first place, just slower and more thoughtful.
But No overarching villain or plot momentum. If you're here for multiverse stakes, this is too small and domestic.

Amphibia2019
A show about a girl trapped in a frog world that quietly becomes about trauma, found family, and self-discovery. The humor is genuine, the character work is meticulous, and it earns every emotional beat.
But The first season is lighter than it becomes; patience required before the deeper stuff lands.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica2011
Both use the bright visual language of adventure to explore pain, identity, and what it means to be erased or unmade. Both feature found family as the only answer to cosmic cruelty.
A deceptively cute magical girl anime that deconstructs the genre with surgical precision, revealing something far darker and more philosophical underneath. Shares Fionna and Cake's bait-and-switch approach to tone, but taken to extreme.
But The art style looks cheap and simplistic at first. The middle episodes are genuinely upsetting and nihilistic in ways that can feel gratuitous.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018
Visually stunning, emotionally intelligent reimagining that's unafraid to get weird or dark. The relationships feel lived-in and the gender-swapped/reimagined approach parallels Fionna and Cake's own concept.
But Heavy on theme and character at the expense of pure action-adventure. Some find the art style off-putting.

Infinity Train2019
A surreal, inventive anthology about a magical train that delivers increasingly strange passengers toward self-reckoning. High-concept and constantly surprising, with genuine emotional weight beneath the weirdness.
But Gets progressively darker and more abstract; some storylines feel incomplete or deliberately unresolved, which bothers people who want neat endings.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
A League of Legends adaptation that transcended its source with stunning animation, intricate plotting, and characters you become obsessed with. The multiverse concept and moral complexity will resonate.
But Violence includes child death and trauma; darker and more brutal than Adventure Time, even at its most serious.

Hilda2018
A show about a girl navigating a magical world that's equal parts cozy and creepy, with excellent pacing and a genuine sense of danger. The worldbuilding is thick without feeling heavy-handed.
But Tone can feel uneven when it pivots between cute and genuinely unsettling.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023
A vampire-hunting adventure that moves with real momentum and style. If you want the darkness and narrative drive Fionna and Cake promises without the sitcom-derived humor, this delivers.
But Very different register—gothic and gruesome instead of playful. No character work as deep as the spinoff attempts.

The Midnight Gospel2020
A podcast-interview show wrapped in animated surrealism that swings between hilarious and devastating. It's unclassifiable and deeply earnest about meaning-making, which Fionna and Cake shares.
But Willfully bizarre and formally strange; some episodes feel like aimless conversations. The finale is about death and dying, which some find exhausting rather than cathartic.

Russian Doll2019
Both explore multiverse/iteration mythology as a way to ask who you are underneath circumstance. Both are ultimately about learning to love people (and yourself) across infinite versions.
A woman stuck in a time loop unravels her own trauma and her mother's, building toward something unexpectedly tender about connection and survival. Funny, inventive, gutting—and deeply about self-discovery across iterations.
But Oscillates between comedy and depression without warning; some hate the tonal whiplash. Season two is more experimental and less accessible than season one.

Wander Over Yonder2013
Both center a friendship (Fionna/Cake, Wander/Sylvia) as the emotional core of the entire story. Both refuse cynicism but don't earn it through innocence—they've *chosen* to care despite everything.
A show about an optimistic wanderer and his best friend traveling a colorful sci-fi universe, genuinely joyful but with real stakes underneath. If you want pure Adventure Time energy distilled and sharpened, this is it.
But Cancelled after two seasons. It's short and ends before you're ready, and the final arc feels compressed to fit a known endpoint.
