Bee and PuppyCat

Other titles called Bee and PuppyCat: the 2022 series (Netflix).

Bee and PuppyCat is a wildly inventive micro-series that plays like a fever dream in animated form. Surreal, gorgeous, funny, and deeply weird, it follows a directionless woman and her shape-shifting companion through impossible spaces. It's for people who love oddness, who don't need everything explained, and who think animation can be as experimental as any art form.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love small, strange moments that feel like a half-remembered dream, where a loopy, deadpan mood matters more than any plot engine and the world's oddities are played straight.

Skip it if you need stakes or momentum, since its episodes drift and its humor is oblique, so the charm can feel thin if you want a story that pushes forward.

What it asks of you: Seven-minute episodes, ten in all, so it asks for a short sitting and patience with a slow, hushed rhythm rather than sustained attention.

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake2023

Similarly strange and whimsical, it builds emotional depth from pure weirdness. Nonsensical moments suddenly crack open into genuine pathos and mystery, with a world that rewards close attention.

But The early seasons meander badly, and some viewers find the voice acting grating. The emotional stakes take years to develop.

Infinity Train2019

Surreal, visually inventive, and unafraid to be genuinely unsettling. It trusts the audience to follow dream logic and rewards viewers who lean into the strangeness rather than resist it.

But Episodes are brief and the anthology structure means no lasting character development. Some feel the darkness overshadows the wonder.

Over the Garden Wall2014

A miniseries that achieves emotional weight through atmosphere and mystery. Gorgeously animated, steeped in folk-tale dread, it builds something haunting from dreamlike logic and half-answered questions.

But It's darker and more mournful than whimsical. At five episodes, it's brief—some find it too short to land properly.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Fantastic Planet1973

Both are surrealist fever dreams that use impossible worlds to explore alienation and power dynamics. Neither explains itself; both trust the viewer to feel rather than understand.

A Czech-French stop-motion sci-fi masterpiece about a small humanoid species kept as pets by enormous blue aliens. Visually haunting and genuinely strange in ways that feel timeless—nothing else looks quite like it.

But It's a 1973 film with glacial pacing. The dubbed dialogue is flat and sometimes awkward. Pure patience required.

Craig of the Creek2018

Charming and inventive without being saccharine. It finds genuine magic in small moments and ordinary places, with a sense of wondering discovery that carries real warmth.

But It's gentler and less visually experimental than Bee and PuppyCat. If you need constant weirdness, this might feel too grounded.

Amphibia2019

A girl falls into a frog world and has to find her way home. It balances humor and emotional stakes while building a genuinely lived-in alternate reality with real consequences and character growth.

But The tonal shifts between comedy and drama can feel uneven. Some arcs drag in the middle seasons.

The Owl House2020

A young human stumbles into a demon realm and forms a found family. It's visually distinctive, emotionally honest, and commits fully to its weird fantasy world without winking at the audience.

But It took time to find its footing; early episodes are less confident. The romance subplot doesn't work for everyone.

Arcane: League of Legends2021

A steampunk fantasy built on class conflict and fractured relationships. Visually stunning and emotionally devastating, it treats its story with genuine weight while maintaining style and personality.

But It's serious and dark. If you want something light and weird rather than weighty and weird, this will disappoint.

Arcane: League of Legends poster

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022

A stylish, heartfelt cyberpunk story about finding connection in a brutal system. Gorgeous animation, strong character work, and it doesn't overstay its welcome at ten episodes.

But The ending is genuinely bleak. Heavy themes of isolation and loss; not escapist viewing.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners poster

Kill la Kill2013

Maximalist anime that commits to pure visual and narrative excess. It's absurd, stylish, and uninterested in being subtle, but there's real warmth underneath the chaos.

But The fanservice is distracting and the plot is deliberately convoluted. Not for anyone uncomfortable with sexual content played for laughs.

Kill la Kill poster

Nana2005

Both follow young women adrift, searching for connection in surreal versions of modern life. Both use visual style and mood over narrative clarity. Both capture a particular loneliness masquerading as adventure.

Two young women named Nana meet on a train to Tokyo and build a chaotic, co-dependent friendship. It's messy, visually dazzling, set to a pounding rock soundtrack, and captures the specific loneliness of wanting to belong.

But It's relentlessly melancholic and ends unresolved. Punky and loud, it won't appeal to anyone wanting lightness or closure.
