Berserk
Berserk is the original Golden Age arc: a scarred mercenary's rise through a company of sellswords, a magnetic commander whose ambition curdles into something monstrous, and a betrayal so total it became genre shorthand. The animation is cheap even for 1997, but the storytelling is ferocious, tender and finally apocalyptic. Watch it if you want fantasy with the comfort stripped out.

But The pacifist turn takes patience — it's slower and more contemplative than the berserker rage you signed up for.

Body horror, doomed idealism, and a world that keeps revealing worse layers underneath. It shares Berserk's appetite for making you flinch and keep watching anyway.
But The mystery-box plotting and constant twists can feel exhausting compared to Berserk's more linear tragedy.

Silver-eyed warriors, demonic transformations, and a grim sense that every victory costs part of your soul — the closest thing in tone and aesthetic to Guts' world.
But Thinner characterisation and a rushed, compressed ending mean it never earns its darkness the way Berserk does.

Both are studies of how ambition curdles loyalty into betrayal and turns brotherhood into war — Griffith's arc is Ran's tragedy with a demon-pact twist.
Kurosawa's Shakespearean epic about an aging warlord whose empire collapses under the weight of his sons' ambition — vast, painterly, and devastating in a way that never needs a drop of fantasy.
But It's slow, formal, and three hours of tragedy without a single monster — a very different kind of patience than Berserk demands.

But It leans on shock value more than earned tragedy, and lacks Berserk's emotional depth.

Ambition, betrayal, and a world where the most charismatic person in the room is usually the most dangerous — Griffith would fit right in at King's Landing.
But It's live-action political drama first, fantasy horror second; the register is cooler and more cynical throughout.

But Softer and more romance-driven; it never goes anywhere near as far into darkness.
Waltz with Bashir2008
Both use animation to externalise trauma too horrific for literal depiction — Guts' visions and Bashir's dreamlike massacres are doing the same psychological work.
An Israeli animated documentary about a soldier trying to recover buried memories of the Lebanon war, using animation not to escape reality but to survive remembering it.
But It's a true story with no swords, no fantasy, and a much quieter, more mournful register than anything in Berserk.
Conan the Barbarian1982
Berserk is this exact archetype pushed into horror and heartbreak; watching Conan shows you the trashy, joyful root the tree grew from.
The pulpy, muscular grandfather of the whole lone-swordsman-against-a-cruel-world genre — sorcery, revenge, and a hero built entirely out of scar tissue and grim resolve.
But It's cheesier, slower, and far less emotionally sophisticated — pure genre pleasure rather than tragedy.
