Happy Death Day

A college student wakes up on her birthday, gets murdered that night by a masked killer, then wakes up on the same birthday all over again. It's Groundhog Day wearing a slasher's mask — funny, snappy, and weirdly sweet under the stabbing. Good for anyone who wants horror with a pulse and a sense of humor about its own premise.

The blueprint for every 'live the same day over and over' story since, including this one. Bill Murray's transformation from smug jerk to decent human gives the loop actual emotional weight.

But No murder, no masked killer — it's a much gentler, slower comedy if you came for scares.

Same director, same gift for stitching horror-comedy tone onto a high-concept premise, this time a body-swap slasher instead of a time loop. Vince Vaughn commits completely.

But The body-swap gimmick is broader and sillier than the time-loop conceit — less mystery, more chaos.

Timecrimes2007

Nearly identical time-loop mechanics to solve a threat to your own life, but stripped of comedy and rebuilt as claustrophobic dread — shows what the same skeleton looks like in a different genre entirely.

A Spanish sci-fi thriller where a man loops through the same day trying to survive and understand what's happening to him — the same mechanic played dead serious, tense and paranoid rather than winking.

But Subtitled, slow-building, and genuinely unsettling rather than fun — no jokes to release the pressure.

Takes the time-loop-as-therapy idea and turns it into a wedding-day romance, funnier and stranger than it has any right to be, with real heart underneath the gags.

But Zero horror elements — this is comedy and romance all the way down, no killer required.

A loving, clever spoof where characters get sucked into an '80s slasher film they know all the rules of. Similarly self-aware, similarly fond of the genre it's mocking.

But Lower budget and less polished — charm over craft, and the meta jokes lean broad.

Edge of Tomorrow2014

Same die-relive-improve structure, scaled up into a slick sci-fi war movie. Tom Cruise gets killed constantly and it's consistently satisfying.

But Big-budget action spectacle rather than intimate horror-comedy — a different scale of movie entirely.

Picks up where the mystery left off and pivots into full sci-fi silliness, multiverse and all. If you want more of Tree specifically, this is the one place to get it.

But Trades the tight mystery structure for looser, goofier sci-fi logic — diminishing returns for some.

Knives Out2019

A whodunit that respects the audience's intelligence while having enormous fun with the genre's conventions, much like this film does with slashers. Deeply satisfying puzzle-box plotting.

But No horror or loop mechanic at all — pure mystery, and a much more classical one.

A bride hunted through a mansion by her new in-laws, played with the same gleeful mix of genuine tension and dark comedy. Samara Weaving is a terrific final girl.

But One long night instead of a repeating structure — different rhythm, same appetite for blood and laughs.

Russian Doll2019

Same birthday-death-loop premise turned into an eight-episode character study — proves the format works as introspective TV dramedy, not just a ninety-minute horror-comedy.

Natasha Lyonne dies repeatedly on the night of her birthday party and keeps waking up at the same bathroom sink. Sharper-tongued, sadder, and more interested in why she keeps dying than who's doing it.

But Slower burn, more existential than scary, and asks for a real emotional investment across episodes rather than one sitting.

Clue1985

Strips out the time loop entirely and leaves the other engine underneath — a houseful of suspects and a corpse — showing the whodunit bones this film shares with much older, sillier company.

A gaggle of suspects trapped in a mansion, working backwards from a murder to figure out who did it and why, played as pure farce with rapid-fire jokes and a rotating cast of red herrings.

But No loop, no horror, and the humor is broader, campier slapstick from a very different era of comedy.
