Gehrayee

A 1980 Hindi horror-drama about a manager's daughter who begins exhibiting disturbing behaviour after her father plans to sell the family's ancestral plantation. Atmospheric and deeply rooted in Indian folklore, it blends psychological unease with supernatural dread. For viewers drawn to horror that operates through mood and cultural specificity rather than jump scares.

Pari2018

A contemporary Indian horror film that similarly uses supernatural elements to explore family trauma and possession. Visceral, inventive cinematography and a committed lead performance create genuine unease without relying on Western tropes.

But The violence is sudden and graphic in places. Some will find the pacing deliberate to the point of frustration.

The Innocents1961

Classic ambiguity about whether children are possessed or disturbed. Spare, elegant filmmaking that lets suggestion do the work. If Gehrayee's supernatural reticence appeals to you, this is essential viewing.

But Almost nothing happens by conventional standards. The horror lives entirely in implication and your own interpretation.

Kuroneko1968

A Japanese ghost story that uses folklore to examine grief and betrayal with stunning visual control. Black-and-white cinematography and a landscape that feels almost alive. Horror as poetry rather than spectacle.

But Deliberately slow. Requires patience and comfort with ambiguity. Subtitled, and the cultural context enriches but isn't always transparent.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Ley Lines1999

Both use the supernatural as an expression of family trauma and social displacement rooted in place. The possession or haunting is never purely supernatural—it's always about what people have done to each other.

A Japanese crime-horror hybrid that uses supernatural horror as a lens to examine inherited trauma, class, and belonging. Visually and narratively inventive in ways mainstream horror rarely is. The connection isn't obvious until you see how both films use place and family as horror's true subject.

But Brutal sexual violence early on. The horror elements don't arrive until the film's second half, so if you're expecting immediate scares you'll be waiting. Subtitled; requires active engagement.

Chandni Bar2001

Another Indian horror-drama that unflinchingly examines trauma and possession within a specific cultural and social context. Raw performances and a willingness to sit with discomfort that mirrors Gehrayee's approach.

But Extremely dark and sexually violent in places. This is not escapism; it's deliberately brutal about what it's showing you.

The Wailing2016

South Korean horror that layers folk superstition, family rupture, and supernatural possibility into something genuinely disorienting. Masterful control of tone and a mystery that rewards rewatching. Epic in scope but intimate in feeling.

But Nearly three hours long. The plot becomes deliberately convoluted. Requires active engagement; passive watching will lose you.

Mahal1949

Pioneer of the Indian gothic, with reincarnation, haunted palaces, and atmospheric black-and-white photography. A direct ancestor of films like Gehrayee; watching it shows the tradition Gehrayee sits within.

But The pacing is leisurely by modern standards. Romance subplot may feel dated. Print quality varies significantly depending on where you find it.

Varnam1989

Tamil horror that uses ancestral curse and family shame as its engine. Strong performances and genuine creepiness that emerges from character and place rather than effects. Explores similar themes to Gehrayee within a different regional cinema.

But Language barrier; subtitles required. The print quality can be rough. Tone shifts between melodrama and horror may feel uneven if you're not accustomed to that register.

Veerana1988

Indian horror set in a haunted mansion with genuine creepiness and practical effects that still hold up. Fun in a way some folk-horror isn't, but with real scares and a willingness to be weird that rewards curiosity.

But Wildly uneven in execution. Slips into B-movie territory. Budget limitations show. Plot holes you could drive a truck through, but that's part of its charm—or not, depending on your tolerance for mess.

The Cloud-Capped Star1960

Both films understand that the true horror isn't supernatural but familial—the weight of inheritance, obligation, and inescapable place. Both use visual austerity and performance rather than plot to generate their deepest unease.

A Bengali realist family drama about poverty and inherited suffering, no supernatural element at all—and yet it functions as psychological horror about the inescapability of family burden. Masterpiece filmmaking from the director of Pather Panchali. If you loved Gehrayee's mood, this proves that kind of dread doesn't need ghosts.

But Bleak to the point of devastation. No catharsis, no resolution, no redemption. A film about inexorable decline. The 1960 print can be grainy. Watching it is genuinely depressing and demands something from you emotionally.

The Legend of 19001998

Both treat the supernatural or fantastical not as genre machinery but as a poetic expression of deeper truths about place, heritage, and the weight of the past. Both prioritize mood and visual language over plot clarity.

An Italian magical-realist drama set on a ship, built on folklore and melancholy rather than traditional narrative. Visually sumptuous, deeply strange, operating on dream logic. Shows how supernatural or fantastical elements can serve emotional and philosophical truth rather than plot mechanics—similar to how Gehrayee uses the supernatural.

But Precious and mannered in tone; easy to find self-indulgent. Very long and deliberately paced. The plot is almost irrelevant; if you need strong narrative momentum, you'll find this frustrating.
