Geethanjali

A Telugu romance where two terminally ill strangers fall in love in a hospital, only for one to discover the other's secret illness. It's tender and melancholy, built on stolen moments and the ache of loving someone you know you'll lose. For anyone who believes the best love stories aren't about forever—they're about right now.

Dil Se..1998

A Hindi film about two people from different worlds drawn together by fate and desire, built on gorgeous cinematography and the tension between love and distance. Shares that bittersweet inevitability of Geethanjali.

But The narrative jumps around and can feel distant; you're kept at arm's length emotionally in ways that frustrate some viewers.

Masaan2015

A beautiful Indian film about grief, love, and redemption in Varanasi. It trusts you to sit with sorrow and finds unexpected grace in tragedy. Stunningly shot and deeply human.

But It's deliberately paced and deals with death, shame, and loss without offering easy catharsis. Very heavy.

Rang De Basanti2006

A film about young people confronting mortality and what their lives mean. It has humour and hope alongside the darkness, and captures that fever dream of passionate youth brilliantly.

But Shifts tone noticeably in the second half; some find it manipulative or politically simplistic.

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu2005

Both films find profound intimacy in hospital settings and terminal illness, but this one strips away romance entirely—it's what Geethanjali would look like in grayscale.

A Romanian film that follows an elderly man through a hospital night. It's about mortality, indifference, and the odd grace of being cared for by strangers. Quietly devastating without a shred of sentimentality.

But It's a real-time chronicle of bureaucracy and suffering. No plot, no climax, just watching someone move through a system. Some find it unbearable.

Pather Panchali1955

Satyajit Ray's masterpiece about a poor Bengali family. It finds beauty and humanity in suffering without sentimentality. Patient, observant, heartbreaking filmmaking.

But It's slow, it's in Bengali, and nothing 'happens' in the traditional sense. The whole point is watching life unfold.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India2001

An epic period drama with romance, politics, and sport woven together. The scale is immense but the emotional core is intimate. A genuinely great film.

But At three and a half hours, it demands patience. Also some find the romance subplot underdeveloped next to the historical drama.

Hey Ram2000

Kamal Haasan in a Govind Nihalani film about identity and loss. Visually striking, thematically ambitious. A film that respects your intelligence.

But Deliberately obscure narrative structure; feels more like a poem than a story. Some shots seem designed to confuse rather than clarify.

Parineeta2005

A sweet, melancholic romance set in old Calcutta. It's romantic without being saccharine, and captures that particular ache of loving someone across a social divide.

But The period setting can feel like nostalgia-for-nostalgia's sake. Lighter than Geethanjali; less ambitious.

Manorama Six Feet Under2007

A Tamil noir about a man searching for answers after a woman's death. Moody, dark, gorgeously composed. Feels like a fever dream of guilt and loss.

But The plot is genuinely hard to follow; characterisation takes a back seat to atmosphere. Some find it self-consciously arty.

Still Walking2008

Where Geethanjali is about two people facing death together, this explores how the living grieve. Same themes of time running out, but the register is completely different—documentary-like rather than romantic.

Hirokazu Koreeda's film about a family gathering after a death. A masterclass in how much emotion you can convey through quiet moments, tea, and the space between people who love each other.

But Japanese, subtle, almost glacial in pace. A film about middle-aged parents and regret. Nothing happens. Requires patience cinema-goers sometimes don't have.

Under the Skin2014

Both are films where the central character is marked by a secret that defines them. But where Geethanjali is intimate melodrama, this is alien, cold, and abstract—a completely different way to explore isolation and otherness.

An experimental science fiction film with almost no dialogue, about something or someone moving through the world. Eerie, beautiful, hypnotic. Scarlett Johansson in a role that strips away celebrity entirely.

But It's genuinely confusing. There's no conventional narrative. Many people find it tedious or pretentious. Requires you to make meaning yourself.
