Angoor
- Screwball comedy
- Light-hearted
Angoor is a Hindi comedy that adapts Shakespeare's *Comedy of Errors* into 1980s Bombay chaos. Two sets of identical twins, separated at birth, collide in a tangle of mistaken identities, slapstick, and romantic confusion. It's joyful, fast-paced, and built on the pleasure of watching smart people become hilariously undone. A masterclass in physical comedy and ensemble timing.

Hera Pheri2000
Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty bounce off each other with the same anarchic energy and comic chemistry that makes Angoor sing. It's a heist comedy built on confusion and misdirection, equally generous to its supporting cast.
But The humour is broader and sometimes cruder. If you prize the elegance of Angoor's construction, this will feel scattered by comparison.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro1983
A Hindi comedy masterpiece about two photographers caught in absurdist circumstance. It matches Angoor's intelligence and physical comedy with genuine satirical bite and a cast firing on all cylinders.
But It's darker—the stakes feel real—and considerably more cynical about institutions and power. The tone is less purely joyful.

Khatta Meetha1978
Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in a romantic comedy where the plot serves the performers. It has Angoor's commitment to making every scene count and the same warm, generous spirit.
But The pacing is slower and more romantic than Angoor's farcical sprint. Modern viewers may find the courtship rituals dated.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Entrapment1999
Both are built on the idea that confusion itself can be pleasurable and that elaborate planning (whether accidental or intentional) creates comedy. Both trust the audience to follow complex chains of causation for the sake of a laugh.
An action-heist comedy about misdirection and things not being what they seem. It has Angoor's pleasure in plotting, elaborate deceptions, and the joy of watching intelligent people outwit each other. Visual and kinetic in ways that complement the slapstick.
But It's a Hollywood film from 1999 obsessed with gadgetry and Sean Connery's charm. The tone is cool where Angoor is warm; it's fundamentally interested in sophistication, not joy.

Bees Saal Baad1989
A mystery-comedy with Sanjeev Kumar in a completely different register—but the same precision and control. It proves he's one of Hindi cinema's finest actors across genre.
But It's more mystery thriller than straight comedy, and considerably stranger. You have to meet it on its own peculiar terms.

Rang Birangi1983
A comedy of remarriage and domestic confusion with real wit in the writing. The ensemble cast creates genuine affection alongside the misunderstandings.
But It's gentler and more domestic. If you're here for slapstick velocity, this will feel slow.

Shaukeen1982
Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt, and A.K. Hangal as three aging men on misadventure. It's funny, affectionate, and genuinely moving about getting older.
But The comedy is gentler and the film is more sentimental than Angoor. It's about reflection as much as confusion.

Rashomon1950
Both films are built on a radical structural insight: identity and truth are slippery things that shift depending on who's looking. Angoor reaches it through farce; Kurosawa through tragedy. The mechanics are inverted but the obsession is identical.
Kurosawa's masterpiece about the same event told four different ways, each version revealing a different truth. It's serious where Angoor is comic, but both films are obsessed with how perspective shapes reality and how the same facts can create completely different stories.
But It's in black-and-white, in Japanese, and deeply concerned with human morality and shame. If you came for lightweight entertainment, this is the opposite direction.
