Television series
The Tomorrow People
Other titles called The Tomorrow People: the 1973 series (ITV1).
A teen discovers he's part of an evolved human subspecies with telekinesis and teleportation, forced to choose between his normal family and a hidden underground resistance. The Tomorrow People is a propulsive sci-fi drama that trades on the familiar tension of belonging nowhere, with solid action and genuine stakes. It's for viewers who liked Heroes' early promise of superpowered intrigue mixed with high school stakes.

The Gifted2017
Mutants hunted by the government find refuge with each other—sharper writing and more grounded action than most superhero TV, with real consequences that stick.
But Cancellation left threads dangling, and it takes two episodes to fully commit to its ensemble focus rather than following one protagonist.

Heroes2006
The original template for ordinary people discovering extraordinary abilities. Seasons 1-2 nail the discovery-and-conspiracy arc with genuine excitement and mystery.
But Quality drops sharply after season two; the show loses its way and becomes difficult to care about midway through its run.

Fringe2008
A team investigates paranormal threats across alternate realities with genuine sci-fi invention. Builds perfectly from procedural to serialized mythology that actually resolves.
But First season feels like standard X-Files homage; it takes until season two to find its unique voice and scope.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Primer2004
Both explore what happens when ordinary people stumble into extraordinary abilities and must make impossible choices about loyalty and survival with incomplete information.
Two engineers accidentally discover time travel and immediately become entangled in paradoxes. A genuinely novel sci-fi film that trusts viewers to assemble fractured reality alongside its characters.
But The dialogue is naturalistic but mumbled, the editing is deliberately opaque, and rewatching is mandatory—it rewards obsession, not casual viewing.

Arrow2012
Grounded superhero drama where relationships matter as much as action sequences. Oliver Queen's journey from billionaire vigilante to leader has real weight and complexity.
But Early seasons are uneven, and the show occasionally stumbles into soap opera territory between the action beats.

Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments2016
A hidden society of supernatural warriors protects the world from demons. Energetic, visually inventive, and genuinely fun about its own mythology.
But Lean budget shows in the effects work, and some dialogue is broad enough to pull you out of the story.

Supergirl2015
An alien raised on Earth learns to embrace both sides of her identity while protecting her city. Earnest, optimistic, and willing to tackle themes of displacement and belonging.
But Tonal shifts between comedy and drama can be jarring, and the show is sometimes too light for its own dramatic stakes.

The Expanse2015
Humanity fractured across the solar system discovers a threat that forces factions to choose between survival and ideology. Hard sci-fi with visceral action and genuine moral complexity.
But Slower pacing in season one tests patience; the show demands investment before the payoff arrives, and not everyone has the time.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.2013
A small team of agents hunts powered individuals in a world where superpowers are emerging. Finds its footing in season two with tighter writing and higher stakes.
But First season is formulaic network TV, and the show takes a while to justify why you should care about these particular agents.

The Vampire Diaries2009
Teenagers navigate a hidden world of supernatural beings in their hometown. Fast-paced, relationship-driven, and unafraid to genuinely surprise you with who lives and dies.
But Mythology becomes increasingly convoluted across eight seasons; it's easy to lose track of why certain rules matter or change.

Dark2017
Both use disappearance as the engine for their plot; both feature protagonists struggling to trust which group has their real interests at heart; both demand viewers piece together hidden family histories.
A German series where missing children in a small town lead to a sprawling mystery across families and generations. Genuinely inventive time-travel mythology that respects the audience's intelligence and pays off meticulously.
But Requires complete attention across three seasons; missing a detail in season one creates confusion by season three, and there are subtitles if you don't speak German.

Scanners1981
Both pit a young protagonist with hidden mental powers against a shadowy organization attempting to weaponize those abilities, and both suggest the real horror is what those powers reveal about human nature.
Cronenberg's visceral body-horror thriller about psychics hunted by a corporation that wants to weaponize them. Relentless pacing, a legendary exploding-head scene, and genuine paranoia about human consciousness.
But Very much a product of 1981; the philosophical dialogue is dated, and the film's relationship to its female characters won't sit comfortably with modern viewers.
