Soul Eater

Soul Eater is a delightful action-comedy about teenagers training at a death academy where some students transform into weapons and others wield them. It's gorgeously stylized, funny without trying too hard, and balances genuine character warmth with spectacular supernatural battles. Perfect for anyone who wants adventure that doesn't take itself seriously but cares deeply about its people.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love anime that mixes gleeful gothic silliness with punchy, monster-of-the-week action, and you enjoy a cast of oddballs whose quirks collide in every episode.

Skip it if you want a slow-burn story with a tight through-line, since this is a bright, episodic romp where the jokes and fights come quickly and the tone shifts often.

What it asks of you: Roughly half an hour per episode across fifty-one episodes, so it is a commitment, but each one is brisk and built to be easy to dip into between longer days.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood2009

A masterpiece of serialized storytelling with similar themes of responsibility and power, gorgeous animation, and characters you'll treasure. It builds to something genuinely profound without losing its sense of humour or adventure.

But It's 64 episodes and the early pacing is deliberate. If you need constant action beats, the first arc might test your patience.

My Hero Academia2016

Another academy show where students master extraordinary abilities through training and friendship. The fight choreography is stunning, the character dynamics are warm and funny, and it captures that same infectious enthusiasm about becoming stronger together.

But It's still ongoing with a massive number of episodes. The newer seasons divide fans on where the story's heading.

Mob Psycho 1002016

Achingly sincere about growth and belonging while being absolutely hilarious and visually inventive. It shares Soul Eater's ability to swing between comedy and genuine stakes without whiplash, and its heart is enormous.

But The animation style is deliberately awkward in places. If you prefer classical prettiness, it takes getting used to.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!2020

Both are about young people forming teams and building something together through creativity and effort. Soul Eater's weapon-meister partnerships mirror the collaborative spirit here, just with less fighting and more storyboarding.

Three teenagers making anime together—it's a love letter to the medium itself. Visually inventive in ways that feel almost like watching someone's creative process, warm, funny, and genuinely inspiring about making art with friends.

But There's no plot in a traditional sense; it's slice-of-life with no external conflict. If you need stakes or antagonists, this is meditative in ways that might feel static.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure2012

Wildly creative action sequences, genuine character depth beneath the absurdity, and a sense of fun that never gets tired. Each part reinvents the formula while keeping the core appeal: bizarre people doing impossible things with style and conviction.

But It's sprawling and tonal shifts are extreme. The first season especially is slow, and it demands patience before the weirdness clicks.

Bleach2004

Captures similar energy: cool weapon designs, academy training, supernatural souls, spectacular battles. The early seasons especially have that perfect balance of humour, character bonding, and 'did you see that fight?' moments.

But It runs very long and develops repetitive pacing issues. Many fans stop around season 8 or 9 and never look back.

Kill la Kill2013

Pure stylistic audacity with a female lead who punches problems in the face. It's funny, visually stunning in every frame, and doesn't slow down for even a moment. If you loved Soul Eater's aesthetic energy, this is its louder cousin.

But The fanservice is relentless and sometimes uncomfortable. The plot is deliberately absurd and refuses to explain itself clearly until the end.

The Owl House2020

Western animation that learned from anime how to balance comedy and genuine character stakes. A found-family story with beautiful action sequences and a willingness to let its teenagers actually grow and change.

But It was cut short by the network, so the final season feels rushed. If you need closure, the ending is bittersweet in ways that might frustrate.

Demon Slayer2019

Absolutely stunning animation that makes every action sequence feel like watching a watercolour painting come alive. The character relationships deepen genuinely, and the demon lore builds a real sense of stakes without abandoning the warmth.

But The plot is fairly straightforward and beats can feel predictable. Some viewers find the protagonist a bit generic compared to his supporting cast.

Blue Exorcist2011

Another academy where students train to fight supernatural threats, with similar humour and a compelling central mystery. Demon design is creative and the found-family dynamics land well.

But The anime diverges from the manga early and never recovers that momentum. Watching it knowing it goes off-road takes some shine off.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Both make found-family and mutual support their core engine. Where Soul Eater does it through combat training, this does it through artistic collaboration—same heartbeat, different medium.

Two girls on Mars singing their way to survival and friendship. It's gorgeous, earnest without being sappy, and understands that music and art matter as much as action. The character warmth is exactly Soul Eater's best quality.

But It's slower and more contemplative than Soul Eater. The sci-fi setting feels secondary to the emotional story, which some find meandering.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

Both begin as fun academy/training shows then introduce genuine philosophical weight about power, choice, and cost. But Madoka goes places Soul Eater never dares—it questions whether the whole premise is worth it. Same DNA, opposite conclusions.

Looks like a cute magical-girl show, then systematically dismantles every expectation you brought with it. Visually inventive, thematically brutal, and achieves something genuinely profound in twelve episodes. Animation shifts wildly to match tone and it's stunning every time.

But The tonal whiplash between the cute exterior and what it's actually about alienates people who wanted magical-girl fluff. It's also quite dark in ways Soul Eater never is.
