Sengoku Basara
- War action
- Relentless
Sengoku Basara is anarchic historical fantasy where Japanese warlords become cartoon superheroes with impossible weapons and stranger animosity. Silly, violent, and gorgeous—each episode crackles with exuberant action and absurd character moments. Made for people who love anime spectacle first and historical accuracy never.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love big, loud, gloriously over-the-top battle anime where the bombast is the point, with flashy duels, absurd poses and warlords who treat every fight like a stage show.
Skip it if you want restrained storytelling or slow character work; this runs on constant spectacle and cheerful excess, and its humour and volume may feel like too much for a quiet evening.
What it asks of you: Three seasons across thirty-six episodes of about twenty-five minutes each, so it is a long commitment, but each instalment moves fast and asks mostly for your willingness to go along with the noise.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann2007
Escalates from giant robots to reality-bending scale with the same fearless energy and visual invention. Combines character drama with over-the-top action sequences that never feel empty.
But Later episodes veer toward melodrama. If you want pure spectacle without emotional weight, the tonal shifts may frustrate.

Kill la Kill2013
Same director's commitment to gorgeous, kinetic action and shameless visual excess. A show that runs on pure stylistic confidence and never apologizes for any of it.
But The fanservice is intentional and relentless. The story can feel deliberately antagonistic to conventional taste.

Drifters2016
Historical and legendary figures thrown into a fantasy setting, colliding with attitude and swordplay. Manga-to-anime adaptation that shares the chaos and the visual flair.
But Animation budget is uneven. Some episodes look stunning, others noticeably less so. Story also left unresolved mid-cliffhanger.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Samurai 72004
Both take Japanese feudal mythology and permission to go completely wild with it, treating history as a sandbox for visual excess rather than constraint.
Steampunk reimagining of the classic tale with robots, trains, and airships replacing horses and castles. Retains the spirit of warrior honor while abandoning historical grounding entirely—exactly Basara's approach.
But Slower paced than Basara and more meditative about its action. Mechanical design can feel dated now.

Fate/Zero2011
Ensemble cast of powerful historical and mythic figures competing in a brutal magical tournament. Gorgeous production and genuine stakes across complex character arcs.
But Much darker and more grounded in tone. If you're after Basara's anarchic fun, this might feel grim and self-serious.

Ninja Kamui2024
Modern anime with the same muscular action sensibility and commitment to inventive combat choreography. Blood-soaked and visceral in a way that honors the anime action tradition.
But Plot is fairly straightforward revenge tale. Character development is secondary to the fight sequences.

Michiko e Hatchin2008
From the same studio during their experimental peak. Different tone entirely—a road movie—but the same willingness to push animation technique and style beyond convention.
But Tonally uneven and sometimes difficult. Not an action show; some find the narrative structure frustrating.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch2006
Ensemble of rival faction leaders with charisma and personal stakes. Mecha action paired with genuine political intrigue and character scheming that keeps you guessing.
But Second season loses focus. Gets increasingly convoluted and relies on plot twists that can feel arbitrary.

Soul Eater2008
Vibrant, expressive anime that prioritizes style and personality. Action scenes with real flair and a cast that refuses to take itself seriously.
But Anime-original ending that diverges from manga. Some arcs feel padded; pacing wavers in the middle.

Talentless Nana2020
Both reward viewers who commit to watching against their first instincts—Basara for buying into absurdity, Nana for letting chaos give way to calculated menace.
Anime that completely upends its own premise halfway through with a protagonist whose power is ruthlessly manipulative strategy. Shocking tonal shift from school comedy to genuine darkness and intelligence.
But Slow start that feels like generic high school anime. Requires patience before the rug pull.

Sword of the Stranger2007
A love letter to Japanese sword tradition rendered through expert anime technique, where Basara treats that same tradition as material for carnival excess. Same reverence for the form, opposite approaches.
Standalone anime film with some of the finest action choreography ever animated. Combines sword combat precision with genuine emotional stakes and perfect visual clarity.
But Quieter and more contemplative than Basara's constant energy. Plot is fairly simple—a chase film without elaborate schemes.
