Ninja Kamui

A stylish revenge anime about a former ninja emerging from death to dismantle the clan that murdered his family. Ninja Kamui is visceral and visually inventive—all extreme close-ups of violence and slow-motion brutality, set to a pulsing electronic score. It's for people who want their action operatic and their grief turned into purpose. Uncompromising and darkly beautiful.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like revenge stories pared down to a single grudge, where the bloodshed is the point and the plot moves in short, hard-hitting bursts of violence.

Skip it if you want a slow-burn mystery or a story with layered characters, since this one spends its thirteen half-hour episodes on movement and mayhem rather than interiority.

What it asks of you: Thirteen episodes of about half an hour each, short enough to binge, but it is dark and violent throughout, with exposition kept to a minimum.

Castlevania2017

Similarly gorgeous ultraviolence and gothic atmosphere. A man returns to fight an ancient evil tied to his personal tragedy. Moody, character-driven action with animation that rewards close attention and a soundtrack that haunts you.

But The first season moves slowly and spends more time on dialogue and despair than combat. Some find the pacing deliberately paced to the point of frustration.

Devilman Crybaby2018

Visceral hand-drawn action and a man wrestling with violence, identity, and belonging. It's ferocious and tender at once, building to something genuinely tragic. The animation during combat is almost too intense to watch—in the best way.

But Extremely graphic violence and sexual content. The tonal whiplash between tenderness and brutality can feel destabilizing rather than moving if it doesn't land for you.

John Wick2014

Revenge thriller that's actually about love and loss, told through immaculate action choreography. A man pulled back into violence by grief. Every fight scene is a ballad. Keanu Reeves gives you everything with almost no dialogue.

But Three sequels have diluted the original's elegance. The first film's pristine simplicity can feel slight if you need deeper plot or character work beyond what's implied.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Killing Eve2018

Both center on a killer defined by training and control, and both are as interested in their isolation and disconnection as in the violence itself. The internal landscape is the real arena.

A British thriller about an assassin and the MI6 agent hunting her—except the lines blur into obsession and dark attraction. Darkly funny, kinetic, visually playful. Eve is a killer with genuine interiority. It's a cat-and-mouse that asks why we're rooting for the cat.

But The later seasons lose focus and get caught up in the cat-and-mouse romance rather than plot. The early seasons' tonal control loosens into something messier and less satisfying.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022

Anime about a desperate man in a neon-soaked hellscape, racing against the clock. Stunning animation, genuine relationship drama, and action sequences that are jaw-dropping. It builds to something genuinely heartbreaking. Relentlessly cool.

But Based on a video game IP that many people find off-putting. The ending is bleak in a way that can feel punishing rather than poignant if nihilism doesn't appeal to you.

Daria1997

A wronged protagonist navigates a hostile world with style and moral clarity. Character-driven, funny, visually distinctive. It proves animation can be smart and small and still stick with you for decades.

But Completely opposite tone and pacing from Ninja Kamui. Domestic comedy instead of revenge. If you're here for the gore and speed, this will feel twee.

Mugen no Juunin: Immortal2019

Gorgeous, violent anime about a man cursed with immortality pursuing vengeance. Sword choreography that's balletic. Deep exploration of what revenge actually costs and whether it heals anything. Moody and introspective despite the combat.

But Very slow and meandering. Not every episode advances the main plot. Some find the pacing contemplative to the point of tedium.

Kill Bill: Vol. 12003

Tarantino's love letter to revenge and style. A warrior returns to finish what was done to her. Sumptuous violence, wild genre play, iconic action sequences. It's a pure expression of rage made beautiful.

But Tarantino's dialogue can overshadow the action, and some sequences veer into pastiche rather than narrative. If you want less talk and more silence, it doesn't deliver that.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 poster

Arcane: League of Legends2021

Stunning animation and character work about broken systems and the people caught in them. Sisters on opposite sides of a conflict. Visually inventive, emotionally precise. The action scenes are secondary to why you care about these people.

But Video game adaptation that prioritizes emotion over plot thrust. Slow-burn character drama. If you want propulsive action and a revenge plot that moves, this is meditative by comparison.

Arcane: League of Legends poster

Demon Slayer2019

A young man seeks to save his sister and avenge his murdered family. Stunning frame-by-frame animation during combat. The action is almost architectural in how beautifully it's composed. Energetic and emotionally sincere.

But Shonen anime formula: lots of tournaments, training arcs, and side characters that slow the main plot. The pacing can feel bloated if you want focus and forward momentum.

Carrie1976

Both understand that revenge is a violence that emerges from within the body. Both use the cinematography itself to express rage—the camera moves like the protagonist's intentions.

A girl with devastating power is humiliated and betrayed by everyone. De Palma's direction is operatic—the final sequence is pure vengeance expressed through visual language. Telekinesis as metaphor. It's horror and tragedy and catharsis braided together.

But A slow-burn character film that only erupts into action in its final twenty minutes. If you want sustained combat and movement, the buildup will test your patience. It's 1976 pacing.
