Resident Evil
Other titles called Resident Evil: the 2002 film, the 2026 film.
- Zombie horror
- Post-apocalyptic
- Very dark
Netflix's Resident Evil splits between two timelines: teenage sisters discovering their father's sinister secrets in a corporate town, and adult Jade navigating a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a virus. It's a prestige drama trying to justify a video-game adaptation through character depth and moral complexity, leaning far heavier on family dysfunction than jump scares. For viewers who want their horror grounded in dread rather than spectacle.

The Umbrella Academy2019
Dysfunctional families with superpowers uncovering generational trauma and apocalyptic conspiracies. Stylish, darkly funny, and genuinely emotional about what it costs to save the world.
But Wildly uneven across seasons; the later ones lose the magic that made the early run so compelling.

Dark2017
A small town concealing impossible secrets across interconnected timelines. Systematically reveals how deeply one family's choices ripple outward, with genuine dread and mystery sustaining all three seasons.
But Demands total attention and note-taking; if you miss a detail, you'll feel lost. German pacing means slow-burn.

Chernobyl2019
Meticulous drama about ordinary people confronting systemic horror and catastrophe. Each episode builds crushing inevitability while exploring what individuals sacrifice when institutions fail.
But Relentlessly grim. No comedic relief, no catharsis, just the weight of disaster and institutional indifference.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Adam Project2022
Both grapple with a parent's hidden truth destroying their child's future, and a young person discovering the world is far more dangerous than they believed.
A man travels back to save his younger self from making catastrophic mistakes. Balances high-concept sci-fi action with genuine emotional weight about fatherhood, regret, and second chances.
But Ryan Reynolds' charm can overshadow the heart; some scenes feel too jokey for what should be devastating moments.

The Last of Us2023
Post-apocalyptic survival grounded in intimate character relationships rather than spectacle. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey create genuine warmth in a devastated world; each episode feels earned.
But First episode is brutally difficult to watch. Some find the pacing too deliberate for what is ultimately a simple journey.

Yellowjackets2021
Survival horror across dual timelines where teenage girls in the wilderness suggest something far darker than mere crash survival. Mystery-box plotting meets genuine character work and unsettling atmosphere.
But Second season loses narrative momentum; the mythology becomes more convoluted than compelling.

The OA2016
Ambitious, eerie, and utterly committed to its own mythology about interdimensional travel and consciousness. Visually inventive with a cast that sells impossible concepts through raw emotion.
But Cancelled on a cliffhanger. Aggressively weird in ways that alienate as many viewers as it enchants.

Penny Dreadful2014
Gothic horror where literary monsters feel like tortured humans. Slow-burn character drama with genuine scares, moral ambiguity, and some of the best acting on television.
But Very slow. Some episodes prioritize atmosphere and monologue over plot; Victorian pacing throughout.

Manifest2018
Mystery about plane passengers returning after years with no memory, slowly discovering something supernatural is unfolding. High-concept premise with genuine tension about family secrets and government conspiracy.
But Repetitive storytelling and contrived coincidences pile up. The final season feels rushed and unsatisfying.

La Brea2021
A sinkhole swallows a neighborhood; families separated between worlds must survive impossible terrain and mounting threats. Creature design is inventive and the escalating dread sustains momentum.
But Cancelled after two seasons. Character writing can be thin and plot logic sometimes doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

Sweet Magnolias2020
A family's dangerous secrets hidden beneath a manicured facade; the real horror is what people will do to protect their own, not infected monsters.
Southern women navigating secrets, moral compromises, and family protection across seasons. Character-driven ensemble drama that treats adult friendship and female solidarity with genuine seriousness.
But Domestic melodrama that relies on coincidence and soap-opera plotting. Not horror; purely emotional stakes in a small-town setting.

Annihilation2018
A phenomenon that transforms humanity at the cellular level, where survival means losing yourself; both ask whether the cure is worse than the infection.
A shimmer appears on the coast, refracting reality itself. Beautifully eerie sci-fi where cosmic horror is internal and psychological; atmospheric dread with no cheap jump scares.
But Deliberately ambiguous and unsettling rather than satisfying. Slow for an action film; demands interpretation rather than providing answers.
