Highway to Heaven
- Fantasy
- Light-hearted
- Dip in and out
Highway to Heaven follows an angel and his gruff, skeptical partner drifting from town to town, mending broken families and softening hard hearts with equal parts miracle and common sense. It's unabashedly sentimental, moral-of-the-week television, more parable than plot. Perfect for slow Sunday afternoons; if you want irony or edge, look elsewhere. This is comfort viewing, sincere to a fault, unembarrassed about wanting to make you cry and feel better.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like gentle, morally earnest stories where each hour settles on one human problem and resolves it with warmth, a little comic bickering between the leads, and no cynicism about people trying to be better.
Skip it if you want serialized plots that build toward something, or you find sermonizing hard to sit through, since most episodes end with a lesson made explicit.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about an hour and stands alone, so you can dip in anywhere. It moves at an unhurried pace and asks you to settle in rather than keep up.

Little House on the Prairie1974
Michael Landon's earlier vehicle carries the same tender, old-fashioned faith in decency, just swapped from wandering angel to pioneer family. If Highway's warmth is what hooked you, this is where that voice was forged.
But Slower, more domestic, and without the fantastical hook — pure homespun drama, no miracles required.

Touched by an Angel1994
The most direct spiritual sequel: angels walking among ordinary people, nudging them toward grace one crisis at a time. Same tearjerker DNA, same certainty that kindness rewires a life.
But Even more overtly religious and unabashedly weepy — subtlety was never the point, and some will find it saccharine.

Quantum Leap1989
Swap angels for a time-displaced physicist, but the engine's identical: a stranger drops into someone's crisis, fixes what's broken, then vanishes before the thank-you. Genuinely moving despite the sci-fi wrapper.
But The time-travel mechanics add a layer of plot Highway never needed, and the tone occasionally tips into pulpy adventure.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Bishop's Wife1947
Same premise decades earlier — an angel walks among mortals to repair a broken life — but filtered through classic Hollywood wit instead of Landon's homespun sincerity.
Cary Grant plays an angel sent to fix a bishop's stalled marriage and stalled faith, decades before Jonathan Smith ever hit the road — dry, elegant, and unexpectedly moving.
But Black-and-white studio-system pacing and a very 1940s idea of romance may feel quaint to modern eyes.

The Waltons1972
Depression-era family drama with the same unhurried belief that ordinary struggle, handled with love, is worth an hour of television. A cousin in spirit if not in premise.
But No supernatural element at all, and the pacing is even gentler — some evenings you want the miracle, not just the sermon.

7th Heaven1996
A minister's household instead of an angel's, but the same weekly rhythm of moral lessons landing softly by the credits. Comfort food for people who liked being told things would work out.
But Leans younger and soapier, with a cast of teenagers whose problems feel smaller than Jonathan Smith's.

Joan of Arcadia2003
A teenager starts getting instructions from God in disguise — an ordinary-seeming stranger each week — which makes it the closest thing to Highway to Heaven filtered through adolescence and doubt.
But More skeptical and moody than Highway's warmth; faith here is argued with, not simply demonstrated.

Picket Fences1992
A small-town drama where the weekly problem is stranger and the moralizing less comfortable, but the same instinct animates it: ordinary people, tested, revealing who they really are.
But Quirkier and darker, closer to prime-time oddity than gentle parable — it bites where Highway soothes.

Christy1994
A young teacher brings faith and stubborn hope to a poor Appalachian community — same conviction that one person's decency can turn a town around, dramatized with real tenderness.
But Only one season, and its period setting and mission-school focus narrow its scope compared to Highway's anthology freedom.

Providence1999
A family drama with a returning ghost mother offering gentle guidance from beyond — smaller stakes than Highway, but the same faith that a kind nudge can set a life right.
But Softer and more domestic, closer to a family sitcom with a supernatural garnish than a true spiritual anthology.

After Life1999
Swap Jonathan's improvised miracles for an actual afterlife bureaucracy processing souls — same idea of otherworldly caseworkers tending human endings, but treated with arthouse stillness instead of TV warmth.
The recently dead are guided by bureaucratic caseworkers to choose one memory to keep for eternity — a quiet, philosophical meditation on grace and helping souls move on.
But Subtitled, slow, and meditative rather than emotionally cued — nothing here is designed to make you cry on schedule.

Kung Fu1972
Structurally identical: a serene outsider wanders into strangers' lives, resolves their moral crisis, and disappears — Highway to Heaven's engine wearing a martial-arts genre costume.
A wandering martial artist drifts from town to town, quietly setting wrongs right before moving on — the same drifter-fixes-strangers structure, just traded angel wings for Shaolin philosophy and fight choreography.
But Slower fight scenes and a very different genre engine — action and Eastern mysticism instead of angelic sentiment, which won't suit everyone.
