A glossy but soft-hearted NBC dramedy about a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who trades liposuction for a Rhode Island free clinic and her messy, loving family. It's comfort food with a conscience — earnest, unhurried, occasionally sentimental to the point of cheese, with her late mother popping up for kitchen-table pep talks. Good for anyone who wants warmth without cynicism, and doesn't mind a life lesson every forty minutes.

A professional woman moves back to her hometown, clashes gently with her formidable mother, and finds meaning in unglamorous work. Same era, same soft-focus realism, same appetite for a good cry.
But It's court-drama-adjacent rather than medical, and the family dynamics are thornier — less hug, more argument.

Takes the dead-parent-as-guiding-presence trick Providence uses lightly and makes it the whole architecture of the show — timelines fold in on themselves, grief becomes structure, tears become sport.
But It's a manipulation machine and knows it; if you clocked Providence's sentimentality as a lot, this is more.

Truly Madly Deeply1991
Both use a dead loved one appearing to the living as their emotional engine; this is the same device played as genuine grief rather than gentle guidance.
A British film about a woman visited by her dead partner's ghost, who offers comfort and advice much like Sydney's mother does — but here grief is handled with real weight, humour, and eventual heartbreak rather than a tidy lesson.
But It's melancholic and slow by design, and ultimately about learning to let go — not a cosy watch if you wanted the visions to stay comforting.

A big, loud, loving family orbiting a matriarch, full of overlapping crises and dinner-table blowups. Same appetite for messy siblings figuring out adulthood in each other's faces.
But Glossier and more soap-opera than Providence — politics, affairs, and plot twists where Providence would just have a heart-to-heart.
Parenthood2010
An extended family muddling through jobs, marriages and parenting with a similarly generous, unashamedly moist-eyed tone. If Providence's small moments made you tear up, this is built entirely from them.
But Bigger cast, more subplots running simultaneously — less one sister's story, more a whole family's traffic jam.

A Japanese film about a man who returns to his hometown and stumbles into work preparing the dead for burial, finding dignity and family reconciliation in a job everyone else looks away from — Sydney's clinic arc in a different key entirely.
But Subtitled, unhurried, and centered on mortality rather than romance or comedy — a real tonal shift from network TV comfort.

It's the documentary ground-truth behind Providence's fictional clinic plotline — the same setting stripped of comfort, showing what that world actually costs.
A documentary following one day inside a public hospital's overwhelmed safety-net clinic — the real, unglamorous version of the free clinic where Sydney plays healer, minus the swelling music and tidy resolutions.
But No plot, no charming cast, no catharsis on schedule — just patients waiting, and the strain that puts on the people trying to treat them.
