Ginny & Georgia

A sharp, brash comedy-drama about a charismatic con artist mother and her teenage daughter navigating small-town New England. Georgia's relentless optimism and sketchy past collide with Ginny's adolescent complications in ways both funny and genuinely uneasy. It's *Schitt's Creek* meets *Ozark* with the volume turned up.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like teen-centred family drama that lurches between soapy melodrama and sharp, funny dialogue, and you're happy to let a mother-daughter tangle run long across many episodes.

Skip it if you want a tight, self-contained story; at roughly an hour an episode across four seasons, and with its messy shifts in tone, it can feel baggy and repetitive.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long haul: around thirty-one hour-long episodes, with a lot of emotional back-and-forth and a willingness to go along with its swings from sweet to sudden.

Schitt's Creek2015

A found-family comedy about reinvention and belonging. Like Ginny & Georgia, it finds real emotional weight in characters who keep surprising you, though it trades chaos for warmth.

But Starts slow and relies heavily on character quirks. If you need plot momentum over relationship building, it can feel slight early on.

Never Have I Ever2020

Devi's navigation of teenage social hierarchy, family pressure, and first love feels like Ginny's storyline. Funny, mortifying, and unafraid to let characters be messy and contradictory.

But Narration by a dead tennis legend is either endearing or annoying depending on your tolerance for whimsy. Some find the tone shifts jarring.

Ozark2017

Georgia's con-artist backstory and moral flexibility echo Wendy's trajectory here. Intense, morally murky family drama where parents' secrets detonate in their kids' lives.

But Significantly darker and more violent. It's a slow burn of mounting dread, not comedic relief. Exhausting in a way Ginny & Georgia often isn't.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Fleabag2016

Both center on women who are fundamentally unreliable—to others, to themselves—and on daughters watching their mothers' constructed selves crumble. Shared DNA.

A mother-daughter relationship where love and resentment are inseparable, where charm is both weapon and survival tool, and where the daughter narrates the wreckage from inside it. The voice, the complexity, the refusal to make anyone purely sympathetic.

But Dramatically quieter and more introspective than Ginny & Georgia. It operates through implication rather than confrontation. Harder to binge.

Dead of Summer2016

A horror-tinged ensemble drama set in a confined space where secrets unravel. Features the same slow-build revelation structure and teen angst, with genuine atmosphere.

But Only lasted one season and ends on an unresolved note. Some plot threads feel abandoned, which frustrates viewers invested in resolution.

Dead of Summer poster

You2018

Dark comedy about attractive people making terrible choices and living double lives. Shares Ginny & Georgia's fascination with unreliable narrators and the gap between image and reality.

But Centers on a stalker's perspective, which is a harder moral watch. Glorification of predatory behavior is a legitimate concern, not just tone discomfort.

The Summer I Turned Pretty2022

Another streaming ensemble about teens navigating complicated feelings against a backdrop of family secrets. Sunnier than Ginny & Georgia but with similar relationship complexity and genuine stakes.

But Simpler and less morally ambiguous. If you loved Georgia's unsettling complexity, this may feel too straightforward.

The Summer I Turned Pretty poster

Atypical2017

Family dramedy where a teenager's coming-of-age challenges his parents' assumptions about who they are. Funny without being flip about real emotional damage.

But Can be heavy-handed about disability representation. Some plot choices feel engineered for conflict rather than character-driven.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City2021

Like Ginny & Georgia, it's a loud, energetic crash of genres that shouldn't work but mostly does. Trashy fun with genuine tension underneath.

But It's a video game adaptation. If that premise exhausts you, this won't change your mind. The plot is deliberately a retread.

The Glory2022

Both are about mothers (or would-be mothers) infiltrating families for purposes the viewer slowly understands. About how charm masks hunger. The genre is different—this is melodrama, not comedy—but the engine is identical.

A Korean drama about a woman orchestrating elaborate revenge by befriending her childhood bully's family. It has Georgia's scheme-making energy and moral murk, but stakes that are genuinely lethal and a visual style that's stunning.

But Substantially more violent and traumatic. The bullying sequences are hard to watch. Requires subtitles (or dubbing, if that's your preference).

Big Little Lies2017

Both are obsessed with what happens when people move somewhere to escape their history and discover it's portable. The mother-daughter dynamic matters differently here, but the core question—who gets to reinvent themselves?—is the same.

Suburban women with secrets, hidden pasts catching up with them, and a mystery structure that pulls you forward. Darker and more visually controlled than Ginny & Georgia, but the same appetite for chaos.

But Essentially a prestige limited series, not a long-running show. Season two dilutes what made season one work. Some view it as a masterpiece, others as self-satisfied.
