The Sex Lives of College Girls

Four college freshmen navigate friendship, identity, and yes, sex, with unsentimental humor and genuine warmth. It's brash and messy without being cruel, finding comedy in awkwardness and kindness in chaos. For anyone who remembers the absolute weirdness of becoming yourself at eighteen.

Fleabag2016

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's unsparing look at a flawed woman's interior life balances devastation with comedy. Sharp, inventive, and makes you feel less alone for thinking weird things.

But The show's tonal whiplash—wild humor sliding into real sadness—isn't for everyone. Some find the fourth-wall breaks gimmicky.

Never Have I Ever2020

Mindy Kaling's love letter to messy teenage girls who don't fit the usual templates. Funny without punching down, and genuinely invested in its characters' growth.

But Occasionally leans on familiar coming-of-age beats. The voiceover narrator can feel didactic if you're not in the mood.

Never Have I Ever poster

PEN152019

A comedy about actual friendship—two women navigating their thirties without romance as the plot. Hilarious, weird, and treats female friendship like it matters as much as romance.

But Ended after two seasons. Dry humor won't land if you need punchlines telegraphed. Very much an adult show.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Daria1997

Both find the full humanity in characters dismissed as types. Sharp girls allowed to be cynical and kind simultaneously. Comedy that respects intelligence over punchlines.

Animated comedy about teen girls who think and talk like adults without losing their teenage humanity. Deadpan, warm, and still the sharpest commentary on high school ever made. Holds up absolutely.

But Animation style is deliberately flat and '90s. Episodic structure means some installments are stronger than others. Won't appeal if you need constant visual spectacle.

Atypical2017

Teen comedy with real stakes. Follows a high school student on the spectrum and his family with humor that never comes from mockery. Genuinely moving without losing the laughs.

But The first season can feel a bit sitcom-y. Some plot threads resolve too neatly for such a messy show's universe.

Ginny & Georgia2021

Soapy but self-aware teen drama with genuine humor running through it. Mother-daughter relationship feels lived-in. Doesn't take itself too seriously but respects its characters.

But Melodrama piles up fast. If you hate plot contrivance or need realism over drama, this isn't your show.

Ginny & Georgia poster

Insecure2016

Issa Rae's show about Black women's lives, friendships, work, and fumbling through adulthood with all its contradictions. Smart, funny, specific, and endlessly rewatchable.

But Later seasons shift tone significantly. Some find the pacing uneven. Not everyone clicked with the final season's resolution.

Kim's Convenience2016

Half-hour comedy about a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Toronto. Warm, funny, and finds humor in cultural specificity without ever feeling like the butt of the joke.

But Gentle humor might feel slight if you want more edge. The show's found-family wholesomeness can feel low-stakes.

Kim's Convenience poster

Broad City2014

Absurdist friendship comedy that builds episodes around pure chaos and genuine love. Completely original voice and fearless about weirdness. A cult show that earned it.

But Very New York-centric. Humor gets increasingly surreal—if you prefer grounded comedy, this launches into the stratosphere.

Russian Doll2019

Natasha Lyonne in a time-loop dark comedy that's hilarious and haunting in turn. Whip-smart writing that respects your intelligence and subverts expectation.

But The tonal mix of acid humor and existential dread won't appeal to everyone. Second season is divisive and heavier than the first.

Please Like Me2013

Same gift for finding comedy in real vulnerability. Characters who are broken and funny and trying, all at once. Friendship as the emotional foundation, not the subplot.

Josh Thomas's semi-autobiographical comedy about a guy processing mental illness, family chaos, and queerness. Genuinely hilarious, devastatingly honest, and makes space for both without diminishing either. Australian gem.

But The Australian setting and accent-specific humor might feel distant. Darker in later seasons than it initially appears. Needs you to be patient with its rhythms.

High Fidelity2020

College-aged examination of identity through a different lens—here, romantic. Same willingness to show characters as selfish and sympathetic at once. Both are obsessed with how we perform ourselves into being.

Zoe Kravitz in a gender-flipped adaptation: a record-store owner examining her romantic disasters. Stylish, self-aware, honest about desire and disappointment. Funny about how we lie to ourselves about love.

But Only one season before cancellation. Protagonist's self-centeredness requires you to like her anyway. Indie-soundtrack film-bro energy won't click for everyone.
