Make It or Break It

A sports melodrama about four teenage gymnasts training for Olympic gold at an elite gym in Texas. Make It or Break It balances genuine athletic stakes with the messier human drama of ambition, injury, friendship and romance. It's sincere about the sport without taking itself too seriously, and it has real affection for its characters even when they're behaving badly.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love a teen ensemble where friendship, rivalry and a punishing training schedule pull at each other, and you don't mind a soap's heightened stakes if the gym floor stays vivid.

Skip it if you want gymnastics filmed as hard sport with little room for melodrama, since its romances and family clashes take up as much screen time as the routines themselves.

What it asks of you: Three seasons and roughly an hour an episode means a long commitment, with plenty of dialogue-driven scenes between the competition sequences rather than a brisk, tightly edited pace.

Friday Night Lights2006

Another sports drama that understands how completely a teenage athlete's world can compress into training, competition and the people around them. Exceptional writing about pressure, loyalty and what it costs to dream.

But Slower and far more elegiac in tone. If you want the emotional rollercoaster that Make It or Break It delivers weekly, this will feel meditative by comparison.

Glee2009

Similar energy: a ragtag group of teens pursuing excellence in a specific discipline, with soap-opera plotting, genuine musical/athletic moments and a show that clearly loves its characters' weird dynamics.

But The show loses the plot spectacularly as it goes on. Make It or Break It stays focused; Glee becomes increasingly unmoored.

Ginny & Georgia2021

Teen ensemble drama with that same Freeform sensibility: sharp banter, real stakes woven with lighter moments, and characters who feel like actual people navigating complicated families and big ambitions.

But Less focused on a single competitive pursuit, so if you specifically want the athletics storyline front and centre, this spreads itself thinner.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Whip It2009

Both understand that a sport's community can save you as much as the sport itself can. Same year, completely different register.

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut about a teen discovering roller derby. Same year as Make It or Break It but inverts its DNA completely: rough, trashy sport full of misfits instead of elite facility; the protagonist starts broken and finds wholeness through team rather than chasing individual glory. Shares the specificity of athletic detail and the genuine stakes, but makes them weird and joyful instead of dramatic.

But Roller derby aesthetics and humor won't appeal to everyone. If you're watching for aspirational athletic excellence, this celebrates the scrappy underbelly instead.

Bunheads2012

Ballet academy comedy-drama with the same DNA: competitive young performers, mentorship, rivalry, and a creator (Amy Sherman-Palladino) who writes smart, funny dialogue without undermining genuine stakes.

But Only two seasons before cancellation. The story stops mid-arc and never concludes, which can feel frustrating after investing in the characters.

Stick It2006

A gymnastics film that gets the sport right and the teen voice right. Funny, well-choreographed, with actual respect for how hard the sport is and why someone would burn out and walk away.

But A standalone film instead of ongoing character development. If you're watching Make It or Break It for the long game with these characters, this delivers closure too quickly.

Step Up2006

Dance competition drama with similar DNA: working-class ambition, a tough mentor figure, the pressure of a do-or-die performance, and genuine dance sequences that earn the emotional beats around them.

But The romance dominates in a way that might feel thin if you're invested in the ensemble dynamics and individual character arcs.

Bend It Like Beckham2002

A sports film that nails the combination of athletic ambition, family pressure and teenage self-discovery. Funny, warm and genuinely moving about what you sacrifice when you chase excellence.

But Resolved in two hours. If you want the slow-burn character development and serialized cliffhangers Make It or Break It provides, you'll miss that texture.

Pretty Little Liars2010

The Freeform playbook at its best: a core group of girls navigating genuine danger and mystery while dealing with jealousy, attraction and friendship drama. Fast-paced, twisty, genuinely fun.

But The mystery plotting gets increasingly convoluted and occasionally nonsensical. Some find the ending disappointing after years of investment.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants2005

Four close friends separated one summer, each pursuing different challenges—including one at a competitive dance intensive. Respectful of ambition and the complexity of supporting each other from a distance.

But Episodic and scattered across four characters, so no single story gets the deep focus that Make It or Break It's central four provide.

Flashdance1983

Same structure, same emotional engine, forty years of film history apart. Whip It and Make It or Break It are Flashdance's descendants.

A 1980s film about a welder pursuing a dance company audition that seems lightweight until you recognize what it actually does: it's Make It or Break It's spiritual ancestor, understanding that athletic ambition is inseparable from sexuality, economic desperation and the fantasy of transformation. The energy is identical; the filmmaking is utterly dated and fun.

But Synthesizer-heavy soundtrack, cocaine-era editing, and a lens that gawks at its female protagonist in ways that read dated and awkward now. The movie around the dancing can feel like watching a music video.

Alma2018

Reverse angle on the same machinery: one celebrates the struggle, one anatomizes the damage. Both centrally about girls trying to transcend their bodies through precision and will.

A Spanish animated film about a young gymnast's psychological breakdown during elite training—devastating, formally inventive, and unflinching about what the sport does to a developing body and mind. Make It or Break It shows the drama; Alma shows the cost. Less than 80 minutes. Devastating.

But Animated and serious. Not a feel-good sports film. If you want the melodrama and ensemble warmth of Make It or Break It, this is clinical and dark and slow.
