Ice Princess

A Disney film about a brainy physics nerd who discovers figure skating and pursues it seriously, despite her mother's skepticism. It's earnest and sports-focused, pitched at young teens who like competence and determination more than irony. Earnestness is the whole thing here.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy a warm, old-fashioned underdog story where the sport's rules of ambition and bruised pride matter as much as the triumphs, and a mother-daughter bond gets the time it deserves.

Skip it if you want a fast, sharp comedy; this one moves at a gentle, earnest pace and leans on sincere sentiment, so its heart-on-sleeve approach may feel syrupy to you.

What it asks of you: Around ninety-eight minutes, unhurried and cheerful, with easy-to-follow beats you can half-watch while still catching the skating routines and the family drama.

Cool Runnings1993

A scrappy underdog story about athletes from Jamaica training to compete in the Winter Olympics. It finds genuine heart in the idea that trying hard at something you love matters more than winning, and it's genuinely funny without losing that sweetness.

But It trades on a real historical incident and occasionally simplifies the culture to get laughs. The tone can feel dated to 90s family-film sensibilities.

Bring It On2000

A cheerleading film that takes its sport seriously while remaining light-hearted. It's about competition, teamwork, and girls who are genuinely skilled at something. The self-awareness about ambition never tips into cynicism.

But The comedy can feel pitched at a very specific moment in 2000s teen culture. If sports montages with pop music make you groan, this has several.

Bend It Like Beckham2002

A soccer film about a girl pursuing athletics against family expectations, with humor that comes from character and culture clash rather than jokes at anyone's expense. It's warm without being saccharine, and genuinely interested in its protagonist's struggle.

But It resolves its central tension a bit too neatly in the third act. The romance subplot feels obligatory to the Disney formula it's working within.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Cutting Edge1992

Both films treat figure skating as a real discipline requiring seriousness and artistry, not as a backdrop for girl-finds-love. Both protagonists discover something they didn't expect to love through a sport.

A romantic sports film about pairs figure skating that actually understands the sport and the artistry involved. It's funny, genuinely tense about the competition, and the chemistry between leads feels earned rather than imposed. The skating itself is beautiful.

But It's from 1992 and looks it completely. The banter skews toward 90s rom-com conventions that may feel dated. The central romance takes as much screen time as the skating.

Stick It2006

A gymnastics film that actually understands the sport and its pressures. It's funny, energetic, and protagonist is sharp-tongued without being unlikeable. The training sequences are genuinely well-shot.

But The villain is cartoonishly drawn. It leans hard into the rebellious-teen-athlete archetype without much complexity underneath.

Stick It poster

Aquamarine2006

A girl-friendship film with a magical premise that doesn't overshadow the actual relationship between the characters. It's weird enough to hold interest and sincere about what matters to its characters.

But The plot is thin and the fish-out-of-water humor wears thin. It's essentially one extended joke stretched to feature length.

Make It or Break It2009

A gymnastics drama series that takes the sport and its athletes seriously. It balances competition, training injury, and teenage life without making any of them feel secondary. Strong ensemble cast with genuine chemistry.

But It's a network drama, so the plotting can be soapy and sometimes overwrought. The show got cancelled, so the ending doesn't fully resolve.

Make It or Break It poster

Akeelah and the Bee2006

A girl discovers spelling bees and pursues competitive excellence while navigating family and community expectations. It takes the competition seriously, centers Black characters with depth, and builds genuine tension around her choices.

But The mentor character is broadly drawn. Some of the resolved conflicts feel a touch easy given how much real resistance she faces.

Center Stage2000

A ballet film that doesn't condescend to the art form. It shows the real discipline, sacrifice, and competition involved in professional dance while keeping faith in its ensemble cast.

But The dialogue can be clunky and the plot relies on some thin characterization of the other dancers. It's very much a 2000 film in its look and pacing.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series2019

A musical about teenagers discovering what they love and having the courage to pursue it publicly. It's got genuine charm, the performances are unironic, and it cares about its characters' internal lives.

But The plot is simple and the songs can feel manipulative if you're not in the mood for them. The Disney message about fitting in while being yourself gets laid on thick.

Whip It2009

Both follow a girl discovering an individual athletic passion her family doesn't understand or support initially. Both are interested in the sport itself and the girl's competence at it, not just the drama around it.

A roller derby film directed by Drew Barrymore that's about finding your tribe and your passion outside the life mapped out for you. It's funny, the sport is shot with real energy, and it understands how identity transforms when you find something that fits. No apologies for the protagonist's choices.

But The film occasionally confuses being counterculture with depth of character. Some supporting players are sketched rather than drawn. If physical comedy and crash humor aren't your thing, there's a lot of it.

Hoop Dreams1994

Where Ice Princess is an inspirational narrative about pursuing athletic dreams, Hoop Dreams asks what pursuing those dreams actually costs and who benefits. Both examine how completely a sport can reshape a young person's life and identity.

A documentary following two basketball players from their childhood through high school into college recruitment. It's genuinely gripping about ambition, class, race, and what excellence demands. You become invested in these real people and their actual choices.

But It's three hours long. It doesn't wrap with the kind of narrative satisfaction a feature film provides—it ends because the documentary ended, not because the story concluded. It can be difficult watching systemic pressure applied to teenagers.
