Heartland

Other titles called Heartland: the 1981 film, the 2012 film.

Heartland follows the Fleming family as they rescue and rehabilitate abused horses on their struggling Alberta ranch. It's a character-driven family drama that balances genuine stakes—financial ruin, grief, aging—with the quiet satisfaction of healing. For anyone who loves animals, ensemble casts, and stories about ordinary people doing hard work well.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like long-running family drama built on horses, slow-burn loyalty and a found-family household where everyday chores carry as much weight as the crises, and you don't mind a show that stays warm and earnest.

Skip it if you want fast plot turns, sharp cynicism or stakes that escalate every episode, since this one moves at a steady, unhurried clip and leans on sentiment rather than surprise.

What it asks of you: Settle in for an hour-long episode most nights of a very long run, twenty seasons and nearly three hundred installments, with patience for gentle pacing and a tone that stays hopeful.

All Creatures Great and Small2020

A British remake about a rural veterinary practice with the same mix of animal emergencies, tight finances, and found family. Beautifully shot, deeply humane, and utterly absorbing across its four seasons.

But It's considerably slower-paced than Heartland, with episodes that linger on landscape and conversation rather than plot momentum. Some find it too gentle.

Anne with an E2017

A Canadian period drama that captures the same spirit: teens learning themselves through hardship, a tight community, beautiful rural cinematography, and adults who actually listen. Smartly written and visually stunning.

But The first two seasons are stronger than the third, and it was cancelled after five, so no clean resolution. Also tackles darker themes than Heartland.

Chesapeake Shores2016

A Hallmark series about a woman returning to her hometown to run her family's business and reconnect with an old love. It has Heartland's blend of small-town relationships, family drama, and the comfort of knowing people deeply.

But It's lighter and more romance-focused than Heartland, with less stakes overall. If you want genuine conflict rather than gentle emotional beats, it won't deliver.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Man from Snowy River1982

Both understand that horses aren't metaphors; they're the reason people wake up. Both are genuinely about the work, not the sentiment.

An Australian film about a young horseman proving himself in wild country. It shares Heartland's visual poetry, its faith in youth and hard work, and the way horses can teach character. Utterly transportive.

But It's a 1980s adventure film, so pacing and gender politics feel dated. Also, it's a single film, not an ongoing relationship with characters—a very different kind of satisfaction.

The Incredible Dr. Pol2011

A documentary series following a rural Michigan veterinarian and his clinic. Real animals, real problems, real solutions—there's something deeply satisfying about watching competent people do necessary work with kindness.

But It's a docuseries, not narrative drama, so there's no character arc or story shaped by screenwriters. Episodes can feel repetitive if you're not genuinely interested in the veterinary work.

When Calls the Heart2013

A period drama set in a small western town where a young teacher builds community and solves problems with grace. Shares Heartland's faith in ordinary people doing right by each other despite hardship.

But It's gentler and more sentimental than Heartland, with fewer genuine moral dilemmas. Can feel saccharine if you're skeptical about small-town virtue.

When Calls the Heart poster

Schitt's Creek2015

A wealthy family loses everything and must rebuild in a small town. It's funny and touching, with the same gradual shift from outsiders to belonging that Heartland executes so well.

But It's primarily a comedy, so the tone is much lighter. The early seasons traffic in meanness that some find hard to warm to before the show finds its heart.

Ginny & Georgia2021

A mother and daughter move to a small Massachusetts town to start over. Ensemble cast, multi-generational family drama, and genuine stakes alongside teen romance and growing pains.

But It's tonally all over the place, lurching between teen drama, mystery, and comedy. Some storylines feel abandoned or forced, and the pacing is uneven.

Ginny & Georgia poster

Virgin River2019

A nurse practitioner moves to a remote California town and discovers layers of community, family secrets, and reasons to stay. Warm, soapy, and genuinely addictive if you like ensemble casts.

But Plot twists feel increasingly contrived as it goes on, and the show prioritizes melodrama over the quieter character work that makes Heartland land so well.

UnREAL2015

A behind-the-scenes look at reality TV production that's both cynical and unexpectedly humane. Fast, sharp, and full of genuine character development beneath the chaos.

But It's dark, duplicitous, and often cruel—the opposite register entirely from Heartland. If you want warmth and goodness, you won't find it here.

All Together Now2020

Both trust teens to be competent and kind, even when circumstances demand they grow up too fast. Both are genuinely about family as a choice, not an accident of birth.

This 2023 limited series follows a high school girl living in her car who finds community and purpose. Like Heartland, it's about young people holding their families together through sheer resilience and about belonging mattering more than things.

But It's darker and far more frank about poverty and precarity than Heartland. The tone is gritty rather than affirming, and not everything resolves with grace.
