The Incredible Dr. Pol

  • Dip in and out

A documentary series following Dr. Jan Pol, a Michigan veterinarian who treats everything from farm animals to family pets with unshakeable confidence and old-school pragmatism. Shot in real time across rural communities, it's genuinely compelling—part medical procedural, part character study of a man who's been doing this for decades and shows no signs of slowing. For anyone who finds comfort in competence and likes animals.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like unhurried observational documentaries where the pleasure is watching a practical, unfussy expert handle one case after another, cows and all.

Skip it if you want a plot that builds, since each episode is a self-contained run of calls, and the hour can feel repetitive unless animal medicine itself grabs you.

What it asks of you: Each hour-long episode is a self-contained visit, so it asks little commitment per sitting and rewards dipping in and out across its many seasons.

All Creatures Great and Small2020

A more literary take on rural veterinary practice, with period charm and deeper character development. Same warmth and animal-care expertise, but with narrative depth that lets you sit with the emotional stakes.

But Slower paced and more interested in the vets' personal lives than the medical cases themselves. If you're watching for the procedures, this leans harder on drama.

Expedition Unknown2015

Same documentary confidence and field expertise applied to archaeology and exploration. Josh Gates brings infectious curiosity to difficult terrain, and the show captures that same 'this person knows exactly what they're doing' energy.

But Less focused and more scattered—it bounces between locations and subjects. If you want to follow one person's mastery, this diffuses that appeal.

The Zoo2017

Takes veterinary medicine into exotic animal care at a major facility. The cases are more dramatic, the stakes higher, the animals more charismatic. Still grounded in real procedure and expertise.

But More sensational editing and storytelling. The documentary earnestness of Dr. Pol gives way to entertainment-first framing.

Gunda2021

The inverse of Dr. Pol's universe: instead of the human expert managing animal bodies, we meet the animals as subjects in their own right. Both examine the human-animal relationship, but from opposite sides.

A wordless, black-and-white documentary about a pig and her piglets on a small farm. Shot with such care and attention that the animals become fully realized characters. It's meditative, surprising, and utterly absorbing.

But No narration, no explanation, no easy emotions. Some find it slow or pretentious. Others find it devastating. It asks a lot of the viewer.

Life on Earth1979

Widens the lens to show how animal health connects to human health and environmental systems. Educational and grounded, with real veterinary expertise at the center.

But More explicitly educational than entertaining. It prioritizes information delivery over character or narrative momentum.
