The Twelve Dates of Christmas

A romantic comedy built on a dating premise: a career-focused shop owner commits to going on twelve dates across twelve weeks before Christmas, hunting for the right person. Lightweight, festive, and built for the exact moment when you want something warm and undemanding. Perfect if you're in the headspace for traditional romantic comedy beats without complications.

Love Hard2021

A woman pursues an online love interest across the country with similar comedic mishap energy and holiday timing. It finds genuine charm in the premise-driven dating structure and doesn't pretend the stakes are higher than they are.

But The humour leans broad and the emotional arcs are heavily signposted. If you've outgrown rom-com formulas, this won't surprise you.

Set It Up2018

Effervescent chemistry between leads, smart banter, and a premise that trusts the audience to enjoy watching two people figure each other out. It's about the *process* of romance, not the destination.

But Very much a Netflix romantic comedy. If that particular tonal fingerprint irritates you, this won't convert you.

The Proposal2009

A boss-employee dynamic with genuine comedic verve and two leads who visibly enjoy sparring with each other. It's a date-movie that doesn't insult your intelligence while still being unambiguously fun.

But Relies on a manufactured central conflict that doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny. The third act smooths over complications rather than earning resolution.

Marty1955

Both films find the emotional truth in the dating premise itself, rather than using dating as scaffolding for star-crossed drama. The human specificity underneath the structure is what matters.

A 1950s portrait of ordinary courtship: a butcher in his thirties, unmarried, goes on exactly one date. The entire film lives in small moments of vulnerability and self-doubt. It's genuinely moving about what it means to risk connection.

But Black-and-white, deliberate pacing, and the scope is intimate to the point of claustrophobia. Modern rom-com expects faster narrative turns and higher stakes.

Happiest Season2020

A holiday romantic comedy that builds genuine stakes around vulnerability and self-acceptance. It's warmer and more thoughtful than the premise suggests without losing the lightness.

But Slower burn than pure rom-com. If you want quick laughs and easy resolution, the emotional texture might feel like it's working against the fun.

When Harry Met Sally...1989

The template for every dating-across-time romantic comedy since. Two people, episodic encounters, the slow accumulation of something real. Beautifully written and perfectly paced.

But Nearly forty years old and it shows in some of the gender politics. Also, genuinely funny in a way that makes lighter rom-coms feel like they're trying too hard.

Holidate2020

A friend-to-lovers premise structured around a year of dates, each tied to a holiday. It's silly, leans into its own absurdity, and moves fast enough that you don't overthink it.

But Aggressively, unashamedly dumb in places. The comedy is often crude and the logic of the plot falls apart if you look sideways at it.

Someone Great2019

A road-trip romance about friends reclaiming joy after loss. It has heart underneath the dating-comedy surface and genuine investment in its characters beyond the central couple.

But Tonally scattered—it wants to be funny, heartfelt, and meaningful simultaneously. That ambition doesn't always land evenly.

Just Wright2010

An underrated entry with chemistry between leads and a premise that allows for actual character growth. It's content to be a solid date movie without reaching for something it isn't.

But Lesser-known for a reason—it's competent but forgettable. There's nothing here that particularly lingers after the credits.

Undone2019

Both centre a woman's agency in choosing romance on her own timeline, rather than meeting an imposed deadline. But this one questions whether the deadline was ever the right measure of success.

An adult woman in her twenties navigates family, identity, and attraction through rotoscoped animation that feels alive in every frame. Romantic elements exist but never as the entire point. It's about becoming yourself while another person might be in the room.

But Slower, stranger, and far more visually demanding than conventional romance. The animation style requires active attention. It's not comfort watching.

About Time2013

Structurally, it's also organized around time and multiple attempts at getting relationships right. But it uses that structure to argue about what matters, rather than to deliver a clean romantic outcome.

A time-travel romance that uses its fantasy premise to zoom out: what you're actually looking for across all those dates is connection to the people already around you. The film earns a devastating shift in what it cares about by the end.

But Emotionally heavy in ways a twelve-date-premise film almost certainly isn't aiming for. The tonal shift from romance to grief and family is earned but abrupt. Not a feel-good movie, despite the marketing.
