The Rosie Project
A romantic comedy built on the collision between control and chaos. A socially awkward professor designs a questionnaire to engineer the perfect match, then meets someone who breaks every rule he wrote. It's about the comfort of order versus the mess of real connection, played for laughs but with genuine warmth underneath.

You've Got Mail1998
Two people with opposite temperaments clash in person while connecting online. Nora Ephron builds romance from banter, shared values hiding under surface differences, and the slow recognition that your ideal partner might not match your checklist.
But The New York City twee-ness hasn't aged perfectly, and the resolution relies on forgiveness that some viewers find unearned.

Crazy, Stupid, Love.2011
A man's tidy life unravels when his wife asks for a divorce, forcing him to question everything he thought he wanted. It balances multiple love stories with humor and genuine emotion, exploring how rigidity can destroy what matters most.
But It tries to do too much—multiple plots compete for time, and the tonal shifts between comedy and sincerity can feel jarring.

The Proposal2009
A controlling boss and her reluctant employee are forced into close quarters. The film mines humor from clashing personalities while slowly revealing why people retreat into control, and what vulnerability costs them.
But It's a fairly broad rom-com that doesn't dig especially deep, and some of the character logic is dictated purely by plot necessity.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Fleabag2016
Both explore how control and questionnaires are armor against vulnerability, but Fleabag dismantles the armor entirely rather than softening it.
A woman builds elaborate systems to avoid emotional intimacy while breaking the fourth wall to narrate her own self-sabotage. It looks like a comedy but operates as a ruthless dissection of how we hide from connection, and then what happens when hiding fails.
But It's British, darkly cynical, and the protagonist is genuinely unlikeable for long stretches—if you want to like someone, this isn't it.

About a Boy2002
A cynical bachelor who's engineered a perfect solitary life meets a lonely boy and his mother, and discovers that his system is meaningless. Warm, funny, and genuinely moving about how other people are the only thing that matters.
But The indie-folk soundtrack feels very 2002, and Hugh Grant's sleaziness in the first half takes time to recover from.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall2008
A heartbroken man unexpectedly encounters his ex at a Hawaiian resort. It uses romantic comedy structure to explore real grief and humiliation, while maintaining constant humor and featuring some of the best character chemistry in the genre.
But It's crude and sexual in ways that might distract from the emotional core you're looking for.

When Harry Met Sally...1989
The template for modern romantic comedy: two people keep running into each other over years while dismissing the obvious. It's witty, structurally elegant, and genuinely earns its ending through accumulated specificity.
But The pacing is deliberate rather than zippy, and some of the gender politics read as dated now.

Legally Blonde2001
Elle Woods refuses to be the woman anyone expects her to be. She disrupts every system designed to exclude her, including romance—the film suggests that real love means accepting someone completely, not reshaping them.
But The early scenes are aggressively pink and shallow, which matches the point but requires patience to get through.

Notting Hill1999
A famous actress and an ordinary bookshop owner from different worlds try to connect. It's romantic, tender, and genuinely interested in why real people get in their own way, usually through self-doubt disguised as practicality.
But It's been copied so many times that some beats feel familiar, and the celebrity intrusion subplot doesn't integrate smoothly.

Someone Great2019
A woman on her last weekend with her best friend before moving away revisits past relationships and recognizes what she's really been looking for. Funny and irreverent, it reframes the romantic comedy as being about self-knowledge first.
But The comedy is raunchy and the pacing meanders, which might feel shapeless if you want a tight story.

Her2013
Where The Rosie Project builds a questionnaire to find a real person, Her shows what happens when you build a person who always passes the questionnaire—and why that's actually a trap.
A lonely man falls in love with an AI assistant designed to be perfectly compatible with him. It's sci-fi romance that takes the premise seriously: what happens when your ideal match has no body, no inconvenience, no contradiction?
But It's melancholic and philosophically bleak about technology and loneliness; if you want warmth and resolution, it withholds both.

Muriel's Wedding1994
Both center on someone's checklist versus reality, but Muriel's Wedding asks whether the checklist-maker ever deserved to find anything real in the first place.
An Australian woman constructs an elaborate fantasy life—the perfect wedding, the perfect husband—while her real self drowns underneath. When it collapses, she discovers that the person she needed to find was already there, and it was her.
But It's bleak before it's hopeful, and Muriel's self-delusion is painful to watch rather than cute; the tonal tilt toward lightness happens late.
