The Marvels
The Marvels is a joyful, visually inventive superhero film that leans hard into character comedy over spectacle. Three women with tangled histories and cosmic powers get accidentally connected and must learn to trust each other while saving reality from collapse. It's fundamentally about found family and the messy work of friendship, wrapped in big-budget action.

Thor: Ragnarok2017
Another MCU film that prioritises humour and character warmth over grim stakes, with a director who understands that chaos and joy belong together in superhero stories.
But If you want your action films straight-faced and serious, this tonal mix will feel flippant in all the wrong moments.

Guardians of the Galaxy2014
A ragtag group learning to function as a team while genuinely enjoying each other's company. Same DNA of affection-laced banter and real stakes that never kill the warmth.
But The humour skews very specific and lands harder for some people than others. If their particular flavour misses, the whole film can feel thin.

Captain Marvel2019
You'll want to know Carol Danvers' first solo film if only to appreciate what The Marvels does with her character. Establishes her voice and stakes, and it's genuinely solid.
But It's the standard MCU origin template executed competently but without much distinctive flair. The middle stretch sags a little.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Fleabag2016
Both are fundamentally about women figuring out how to love each other despite damage and distance. The comedy comes from genuine affection, not at anyone's expense.
A show about three women with complicated relationships learning to exist in each other's lives. It's hilarious and genuinely moving, with no moment wasted. The energy and rhythm of ensemble chemistry is pure delight.
But It's a British comedy-drama that refuses to resolve everything neatly or make anyone entirely sympathetic. Some viewers find that messiness frustrating.

Ms. Marvel2022
A six-episode origin story for Kamala Khan that understands her as a character in ways the film can only gesture at. Joyful, stylish, genuinely funny. Essential context that makes The Marvels sing harder.
But It's a TV commitment in a world where MCU films are expected to be standalone. Some people resent that requirement.

Ant-Man and the Wasp2018
Lighter-touch action comedy that trusts its characters to be funny without making jokes at the expense of stakes. Paul Rudd's low-key warmth feels ancestral to The Marvels' tone.
But The plot is genuinely thin and exists mostly to hang action sequences and banter on. If you need narrative weight, this won't deliver it.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings2021
A superhero film that knows action and emotion aren't opposing forces. The family dynamics matter as much as the fights, and the character work is genuinely touching.
But Some viewers find the tonal shifts between introspection and spectacle jarring rather than complementary. The villain can feel slightly undercooked.

Black Widow2021
Female-led action with real thematic weight about trauma and sisterhood. It cares deeply about its characters' interior lives while delivering solid spy-craft action.
But It arrives late in the MCU timeline dealing with character history you need to have absorbed. Newcomers will feel lost on the emotional stakes.

Eternals2021
Zhao's distinctive visual style and genuine investment in character relationships over plot mechanics. It's weird in the MCU context, which means it tries things others don't.
But The ambition outpaces the execution in places, and at nearly three hours it tests patience. The plot doesn't quite justify its runtime.

Iron Man2008
The film that started it all, and it holds up because Downey Jr.'s charisma and the character's fundamental likeability carry you through even when the plot mechanics creak.
But The action sequences are pretty rote by modern standards, and the film's gender politics feel ancient. Watching origin stories can feel like homework.

Everything Everywhere All at Once2022
Both use cosmic entanglement and power-sharing as literal metaphors for emotional intimacy between women. Both say: spectacle is only meaningful if you care about the people in it.
A wildly inventive sci-fi action film where the multiverse premise exists entirely to explore how people reconnect across versions of themselves. Visually stunning, tonally fearless, genuinely moving.
But The visual and narrative maximalism exhausts some viewers. It's demanding and refuses to slow down for anyone not ready to keep pace.
