Black Widow

Other titles called Black Widow: the 1987 film.

A prequel-ish reckoning with Natasha Romanoff's past as a Soviet assassin, centering on the abusive spy factory that made her. Less a traditional superhero film than a character study wrapped in espionage action: it's intimate, messy, sometimes funny, occasionally devastating. For viewers who want their Marvel with some real damage showing.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy a spy thriller tangled up in family grudges, where the fight scenes carry emotional weight and the sharpest moments come from two women who clearly annoy each other.

Skip it if you want the snappy, joke-per-minute Marvel rhythm, since the middle stretches sag into long setups and it runs past two hours with a lot of talking about the past.

What it asks of you: Settle in for just over two hours of mostly steady, slightly heavy talk between bursts of brawling, with the bigger-screen spectacle arriving in chunks rather than one long rush.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier2014

The template for grounded espionage within the superhero formula. Political intrigue, moral compromise, fight choreography that feels brutal. This is the film *Black Widow* learned from.

But If you want big cosmic stakes and world-ending threats, this delivers something smaller and slower. It requires patience.

Atomic Blonde2017

Charlize Theron as a MI6 agent in Berlin, 1989. Stunning action sequences, emotional weight beneath the spy craft, a female lead who's allowed to be damaged and difficult. Scratches the same itch.

But The plot is secondary to the atmosphere and action. If narrative clarity matters more than mood, you'll be frustrated.

Red Sparrow2018

Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian ballerina turned SVR asset. Morally murky, sexually dangerous, focused on coercion and survival. Takes the espionage seriously without superhero gloss.

But Slow-burn spy thriller with graphic content. The violence and sexual threat are explicit, not stylized. Some find it ponderous.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Nikita1990

Both films build entire narratives around redemption and escape from the machine that created you—not as victory but as longing.

Luc Besson's *La Femme Nikita*: a French fugitive sentenced to death becomes a government assassin instead. The original template for 'broken woman rebuilt as weapon.' Balletic action, tragic intimacy, Paris-noir atmosphere. This is where the idea was born.

But Subtitled, 1990s French production values. The aesthetic is cool but demands patience. Some find the slow first half a slog.

The Bourne Ultimatum2007

Matt Damon chasing down his own origin as a brainwashed assassin. Kinetic action, existential dread, a hero unlearning what they were made to be. The DNA of modern spy thrillers.

But Shaky cam that bothered viewers even then. And at this point it's well-trodden ground for most audiences.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout2018

Tom Cruise executing jaw-dropping practical stunts in service of a revenge plot that doubles back on itself. Pure technical filmmaking: no CGI veil, just commitment and physics.

But The plot is genuinely convoluted. You'll need to track multiple betrayals and allegiances. Some see that as richness; others see busy work.

Spy Game2001

Robert Redford and Brad Pitt in a mentor-mentee espionage story told in fractured flashback. Stylish, clever, about the human cost of the job. Underrated gem.

But Bounces between timelines in ways that can feel gimmicky. It's lighter than *Black Widow*, which some will prefer and others won't.

The Long Kiss Goodnight1996

Geena Davis as a former black ops assassin recovering her memory while protecting her daughter. Violent, funny, surprisingly tender. Samantha Jackson and a script that trusts its audience.

But Very '90s action film—dated effects and tone. If you want modern production values, you'll notice the age immediately.

Anna2019

Sasha Luss as a Russian KGB recruit turned CIA asset, playing both sides. Slick, operatic spy film with reversals and style. Luc Besson's most restrained work.

But The narrative threads don't always cohere. Some twists feel engineered rather than earned. And Luc Besson's eye-candy tendency grates for some.

The 3552022

Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong'o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing as international spies on a globe-trotting mission. Ensemble action with craft and warmth, made after *Black Widow*.

But Studio spy adventure that aims for slick fun over depth. If you want character meat, you won't find it here. It's the entree, not the meal.

Lamb2021

Both films understand that the deepest trauma comes from family, from those who were supposed to protect you. Both find horror not in monsters but in what love becomes when twisted by isolation.

Icelandic folk horror: a couple raises something that isn't quite human in isolation. Gorgeous, strange, deeply unsettling. Shot like a fable, feels like a fever dream. World-class cinematography in service of genuine dread.

But Slow, quiet, oblique. Not a narrative you can summarize easily. Surreal and heavy in mood. Nothing like an action film—tests patience severely.
