Eternals

Eternals is Marvel's most ambitious swing in years: a 156-minute cosmic epic introducing ten immortal aliens tasked with protecting humanity while wrestling with questions of purpose, identity, and whether they should interfere at all. Visually sumptuous, thematically restless, it's for viewers hungry for MCU scope with genuine philosophical weight.

TMDb rating3.4

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like sprawling, ensemble-driven myth-making, where the cosmic backstory matters as much as the punches and you don't mind a slow build to the big set pieces.

Skip it if at over two and a half hours with a crowd of characters to juggle, it sprawls, so anyone wanting lean, punchy superhero pacing may feel restless.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, unhurried sit: the story moves between eras and personalities, and it wants your patience for its mythology before the spectacle takes over.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness2022

Sam Raimi's baroque direction elevates cosmic stakes into genuine spectacle. Like Eternals, it asks what happens when godlike power meets human consequence, but with more visual invention and emotional clarity.

But Raimi's style can feel showy, and the plot gets convoluted. If you want a tighter story, this isn't it.

Thor: Ragnarok2017

Taika Waititi transforms cosmic mythology into something intimate and funny. It has Eternals' ambition without the tonal confusion—it knows exactly what it wants to be and commits fully.

But Prioritizes charm and humour over grandeur. If you came for Eternals' portentous atmosphere, this might feel slight.

Black Panther2018

A superhero film that trusts its audience to handle political and philosophical weight alongside action. Like Eternals, it believes genre can contain real ideas about duty, legacy, and what the next generation owes the past.

But The third act reverts to MCU formula. Some find the tonal shift jarring after the character work that precedes it.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

La Jetée1962

Both grapple with immortality as existential curse; both ask whether beings outside time can meaningfully love or choose; both use their scale to ask intimate questions about consciousness and purpose.

A 28-minute film told almost entirely through still photographs, yet it contains more genuine meditation on time, memory, and destiny than most three-hour epics. A masterpiece about immortality as burden. Eternals reaches for what Chris Marker achieved effortlessly decades before.

But Experimental form demands patience and surrender. If you need conventional narrative momentum, this will feel static and cold.

Dune2021

Dennis Villeneuve delivers the cosmic scale Eternals reaches for: sprawling, visually immense, deeply concerned with ideology and destiny. Proves that long-form sci-fi spectacle can be profound and hypnotic.

But Part One of a story that doesn't resolve. If you need closure in a single film, frustration awaits.

The Fountain2006

Darren Aronofsky's mad, magnificent attempt to wrangle immortality and love across centuries. Shares Eternals' reach and its willingness to be messy—to swallow ambition even if it risks choking.

But Deeply divisive. For some it's profound; for others it's self-indulgent pretension. There's almost no middle ground.

Guardians of the Galaxy2014

Proof that Marvel space adventures work best when they're weird, funny, and anchored in genuine character affection. A romp with heart—lighter than Eternals but equally committed to its misfits.

But Tone is relentlessly upbeat. If you want gravitas and philosophical wrestling, this will feel frivolous.

Wonder Woman 19842020

A superhero film that stops to ask what immortal beings actually *feel* about time, desire, and loss. Sincere in ways that feel almost vulnerable. Fails in places, but never through lack of ambition.

But Suffers from script issues and tonal inconsistency. The second half can't quite deliver what the first half promises.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings2021

A gorgeous, character-driven MCU film that knows when to be quiet. Like Eternals, it's unafraid of beauty and reflection amid the spectacle, and it actually lands both.

But Smaller in scope than you might expect. If you're coming for epic scale, it's more intimate than Eternals.

Captain Marvel2019

A cosmic origin story that questions identity and memory the way Eternals does. Brie Larson's performance carries genuine weight; the film doesn't undercut her by making everything a joke.

But Plot is fairly straightforward. For some viewers, there's not enough thematic meat to justify the runtime.

Stalker1979

Both are structured around a journey where the destination matters less than what the travelers learn about purpose and belief; both ask what it means to be trusted with power; both believe cosmic questions deserve silence as well as spectacle.

Tarkovsky's transcendent three-hour meditation on desire, faith, and whether immortality (or any god-like power) has meaning without understanding why you want it. Slow cinema as profound as it gets. Where Eternals reaches for the philosophical, this *is* philosophy made visible.

But Glacially paced. Long takes, minimal plot, dialogue about interiority. If you want to feel the passage of time, you will. If you hate that, don't start.
