The Five Obstructions
- Drama
- Strange
A meta-documentary where Lars von Trier repeatedly challenges filmmaker Jørgen Leth to remake his 1967 short film under increasingly bizarre constraints. It's a playful chess match between two artists, funny and intellectually nimble, examining how limitations breed creativity. For anyone curious about how films actually get made, or who enjoys watching brilliant people problem-solve in real time.

Synecdoche, New York2008
Charlie Kaufman's opus about a theatre director creating an ever-expanding replica of life itself. Like The Five Obstructions, it's fascinated by how art mirrors and transforms reality, and how artists become trapped by their own ambitions.
But Deliberately difficult and recursive to the point of opacity. Some find it pretentious; others find it genuinely depressing rather than illuminating.

F for Fake1973
Orson Welles meditates on fakery, authorship, and the nature of cinema itself, mixing documentary and fiction in playful ways. Both films are magic tricks that expose their own mechanics while remaining enchanting.
But Structurally fragmented and digressive. Welles is having fun at the audience's expense, which some viewers experience as condescension.

Exit Through the Gift Shop2010
Banksy's documentary about street art and artistic identity, where the filmmaker and subject wrestle for control of the narrative. Like von Trier and Leth, it's about power, creativity, and who gets to decide what art means.
But The final revelation divides viewers sharply on whether Banksy is being clever or cruel. The whole thing might be a prank, which some find tiresome.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Dogville2003
Made simultaneously by von Trier as his own kind of obstruction. Where The Five Obstructions is playful, Dogville applies the same constraint philosophy to tragedy.
Von Trier's own film from the same year—a three-hour stage play shot without sets, about cruelty and judgment. It's the companion piece: von Trier applying his own obstructionist logic, forcing actors and audiences to imagine rather than see.
But Glacially slow, morally bleak, and features Nicole Kidman being systematically humiliated. Not entertainment; closer to punishment.

Contempt1963
Godard's film-within-a-film about a director making a film, starring Fritz Lang as himself. It's about artistic vision colliding with commerce and human relationships, shot in gorgeous colour and propulsive rhythms.
But Deliberately self-conscious and withholding. Long takes, lots of talking, minimal plot. If you want narrative momentum, this will frustrate you.

Undertow2004
Javier Fuentes-León's debut about two fishermen in Peru whose lives are upended by love and desire. It shares von Trier's interest in how constraints—social, sexual, moral—force people to remake themselves.
But Quietly devastating and sexually explicit. The pacing is measured, and the ending offers no consolation. Heavy viewing.

The Circle2000
Jafar Panahi's feature about a film director trying to make a film in Iran, battling censorship and circumstance. A real filmmaker working under real obstructions, darker and more urgent than von Trier's intellectual game.
But Bleak and claustrophobic. The constraints aren't playful—they're suffocating. Some find it more depressing than thought-provoking.

Inland Empire2006
David Lynch's three-hour opus about an actress, a film, and the dissolution of reality. Obsessed with how cinema creates identity and how stories possess their makers. Genuinely weird in ways The Five Obstructions only gestures toward.
But Deliberately incomprehensible and punishing. It does not want to be understood. If you need narrative sense, this will exhaust you.
