A queasy, tightly wound early-90s stalker thriller in which the person destroying your life is the roommate you invited in. Jennifer Jason Leigh's slow-motion identity theft of Bridget Fonda is director Barbet Schroeder's real subject — not romance gone wrong but the terror of letting someone get close enough to become you.

But Its sexual politics have aged badly, and the ending was infamously reshot to punish the woman harder than the film intended.

Basic Instinct1992

Same year, same erotic-thriller fever, relocated to a police interrogation room. Sharon Stone's Catherine Tramell is exactly as unreadable and dangerous as Hedra, just far louder about it.

But It's pulpier and more explicit, with a plot more interested in seduction than in psychology.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle1992

A woman infiltrates a family instead of a flatshare, and the slow reveal of her true motive works the identical nerve — trust extended to exactly the wrong person.

But The setup is broader and more melodramatic, trading psychological subtlety for straightforward domestic-thriller mechanics.

Persona1966

Both are about identity collapsing under proximity: two women sharing space until one starts wearing the other's life. Persona is the meditation; SWF is the slasher version of the same idea.

Two women isolated together, one absorbing the identity of the other until the line between them dissolves entirely — the psychological premise SWF only gestures at, played here as genuine existential horror.

But It's a demanding, elliptical arthouse film with no genre payoff — closer to a dream than to a thriller.

The Imposter2012

SWF is fiction about someone stealing a life; The Imposter is the almost unbelievable true version, and just as unsettling for being real.

A real teenager's grieving family accepts a grown Frenchman as their long-missing son — a true story of identity theft so audacious it makes Hedra's scheme look amateurish.

But It's a documentary, and the real, unresolved horror at its centre offers no tidy thriller resolution.

The Talented Mr. Ripley1999

Both are studies in identity envy curdling into violence; Ripley trades pulp mechanics for tragic elegance, and hands the obsessive the starring role instead of the villain's.

Swap the roommate for a friend abroad and the gender for male, and you get the same engine: an envious nobody who wants to become someone else so badly he'll erase them to do it.

But It's slower, more handsome and more tragic — a character study of longing rather than a thriller built for tension.
